I didn't realize there was a camp north of the path to the easy camp. Apparently the general strayed off target and hit the nearest camp that was hidden from me due to lack of exploration in that region.

I had this happen also, I am thinking that the General will attack the closest camp if the one you sent him to is further away.
It's not a bug. It's called strategery. If you tell your general to attack bandits at point C, and point B and A are along the way, he will attack all 3, given that he enters there hostile zones. It's designed that way to make you pull your hair out, I'm sure ;)
The barbarian camps have a "agro" range on them you can see in red around them crossing through this will cause them to attack your general
I had the same thing happen doing the 'tutorial'. I'd almost say this is a bug reason being that 'fog of war' should prevent a general from going into an area not explored. Upon exploring the region my first explorer went and explored the area directly to the east of my camp, the next explorer I sent did an area way to the north. Now at level 16 my quest is to explore the area either to the northwest or southeast of which were explored earlier. Now as an explorer of your camp and not a spy I'd say the explorer would automatically get killed going into bandit area. So, bug imo, general should take the most direct route which also would be the most strategic because he had been given a set of orders and that wasn't to explore it was to attack the marked bandit camp and since the path is not blocked by anything then he should have taken the most direct route NOT through fog of war.
