Suggestion: Game Global chat rules made clear

There has been a lot of issues lately in the global chat on what is and is not appropriate. The code of conduct is not very clear on what is and is not allowed. While we are all here to play the game, it is a social game and interaction with others is part of the fun for many people.

There are many players who believe that they can set the world chat rules to their liking and force them on other players, but the final say is always with the GM's. At what point is the line drawn? do we have to make sure everyone in the global chat is satisfied with the discussion, or is there a level of tolerance that is expected? When should you ignore someone, and when should you report them?

Many have said that the chat should be kept at a PG level. However there is not a lot of agreement of what PG really is. What language is and is not tolerable? What level of joking around crosses the line of insults and racism? When is adult humor going too far?

The official guidelines for PG are as follows:
PG - Parental Guidance Suggested - Some Material May Not Be Suitable For Children. Generally appropriate for children age 10 and older and may contain milder swear words, brief smoking, crude/suggestive humor, natural non-sexual nudity, short and infrequent horror moments and/or mild violence. Usually no drug use is acceptable in this category. Topless men may be present but topless woman are not usually acceptable unless in an educational or scientific context. A few racial insults may also be heard. Before the creation of PG-13, many "PG" films (e.g. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins) included explicit violence.

Personally I have always followed the Loony Toons rule when it comes to adult humor: If a 10 year old can understand the underlying meaning then it has gone too far.

My understanding of the rules is this: is You should not use any words that are starred out, however many curse words are not filtered out, and many non-curse words are so use some good judgment. If a word is starred out and is obviously a curse word then no one should be working around the filter by inserting a $ for s or misspelling the word to skip the filter, the word should not be used at all. (There is one problem with this: The current filter does not star out the word on your screen if you are the one typing it, so you are not aware it starred out unless others tell you.) Joking around, flirting, teasing, etc is fine as long as it does not cross the line. If you do not like what is going on the place players on ignore unless it violates the rules. Racial slurs or personal attacks/insults are not acceptable. no explicit adult content. (Fully revealed or expressed without vagueness, implication: leaving no question as to meaning or intent.) If a GM tell you to stop, you stop without arguing. GM's always have the final say. And last but not least Trolls should be buried alive. (OK maybe not in the rules...YET!)

I do not think the problem is that people are intentionally breaking rules. I think the rules are not stated clearly enough for people to understand or define them, therefore they are making them up to fit their personal agenda.

I am suggesting that the GM’s set some guidelines for what is unacceptable and will result in a ban. For example, when a GM gives a warning the violation should be clear. Are they using foul language, insulting others, trolling or being too explicit? I witnessed today a GM giving a player a warning (deserved mind you) but then gave the player another warning that was not really understood by other players. We do not want the GM’s to have to police the game 24/7, they have more important things to handle. By making the rules clear their job will be easier. It will also give players some guidelines on what they should and should not be reporting, saving the GM's time as well.

Lets try to keep the game fun for everyone who has reasonable expectations. We cannot please everyone, since some people are unreasonable or refuse to tolerate anything outside of their personal comfort zone. Working together will make the job on the GM's easier, which gives them more time to improve the content and create fun events.

No offense adolia, and you obviously put a lot of thought and consideration into this post.
However, I suggest everyone in global chat use the ignore feature.

The ignore feature is fine if you are an adult (although it should be on the popup click menu when you click on a persons name in chat) but the one issue I have is when there are younger kids online. Most younger kids are very interested in learning bad words/sayings and don't understand when adults are just joking around about race/***/religion/etc. They can start emulating those bad attitudes (depends on kid and age of course), thus they will not usually add someone to the ignore list who is being offensive, they tend to read them more closely...

This all depends on the age and the personality of the kids, I have a 12 year old and a 8 year old. My 12 year old has heard most of this stuff already and generally just ignores it (I see eye rolls quite often when he plays online games). But my 8 year old... she is just learning all the bad words and I would rather she learned it from kids her own age instead of a pile of (potentially) offensive adults kidding around who may not even have children (if you have kids, you modify your behavior when other kids can hear), or realize that an 8 year old is reading over my shoulder/playing...

And before someone says this game is not suited to kids... Your kidding right? This game has very little violence (vs a FPS or WOT), it teaches them mathematics (e.g. production chain ratio's), delayed economics (using coins later in game for more important things), the value of friends (buffing each other), strategy, etc. I also don't remember anything when I signed up asking about my age...

Most of the players playing this game should know what is and isn't acceptable in game chat especially global chat, this game is suited for players of all ages and every one should be respectful of each other. Joking with each other is fine, and that's great in my opinion but, there is a line however undefined as it may be we should all have the common sense to know what can be said.

Thank you all for your input. I agree SirRoy, the ignore feature should fix most problems. However when someone is crossing the line everyone ignoring them may get some relief, but anyone logging on and just entering isn't aware, so you still get sucked into the situation. If the ignored person is saying your name constantly then other people in chat are asking you what is going on and expecting you to respond or defend yourself. At some point ignore just isn't enough.

I agree Skitzman69 that we do need to be aware that children may be online. However this game is targeted towards adults. The code of conduct states that anyone under 18 must have parents permission to play. Hopefully parents supervise their children when using a game like this where there is interaction with adults (for safety if nothing else!) I do want to point out that whether a child hears something from their friend, television, or other adults it will have the same effect. As a parent the best thing you can do is to be open and honest with your child so that when they are confused or have questions, they feel comfortable enough to come ask you. Damage can be done by the explanation (or lack of) more often than by the exposure itself. (sorry, 67 foster children, hundreds of hours of parenting classes and writing a guidebook on teaching children independence makes things like this a pet peeve!)

Mistapink I agree, most players should know what is and isn't acceptable. My post was to point out to the few who do not seem to get it that there are some standards that are expected, and to explain to those who are suspended from the game for global chat violations WHY.

It is always a joyous event to be celebrated when someone is banned from chat. That means someone beyond the ignore solution is gone.

I disagree SirRoy, when someone is banned it isn't something to celebrate. People who cannot seem to fit within rules, or who feel they are exempt are usually mentally unstable or mentally ill. It is much more satisfying to me when someone who is being inappropriate learns from their mistakes and conforms to the rules, eventually fitting in and becoming part of the community.

That being said, there are exceptions to everything, and there are those few people who have no hope other than a lobotomy to cure their behavior problems!

first off, if kids are playing this, it is up to their parents to monitor what the kid is doing and reading and using the ignore feature when needed.
Second, to say someone is mentally ill or mentally unstable because of their way of "joking" or chatting is ignorant. no one fits into a small box and ONLY what you deem appropriate is what is allowed to be said. There is always a line, if it gets crossed, say something, if you do not like it... ignore them.

I have played more games than i should have and this always comes up. there is an IGNORE feature, use it. it is that simple. if someone is going off on a rambling of crap... ignore them. what else do you need to do ?

Obviously you have no children or you are a child yourself. As a father, I carefully screen most of what my children are into. In this case I would have read the game rules before allowing my children to play. What you do miss out here is the fact that the rules may have been made out of compulsion, perhaps due to an incident which made it necessary for the rules to be created. If the game developers were targeting a larger audience to include children when making Castle Empire, then they will establish appropriate rules to meet those needs. These rules protect and endorse the rights of the game developers as well as the rights of the players. In short, it also protects the quality of the game for everyone involved. Both developers and players. No one is putting everyone into a small box. This is a free game with established rules that you elected to join. Hence you put yourself into a box (if you see it that way). When you decide to join any organization for that matter, check their rules and regulations, before you join them.

i have 3 kids actually, and i monitor everything they do on the net. IF i see something going on that's not appropriate, I take care of it right away. Also you have an ignore feature, use it. no matter what the rules are, if there is something you see you do not like... /ignore.. done. ranting and raving on forums or in chat does what exactly ? just because you deem something inappropriate, it does not mean that i do, or even the GM's do. /ignore and the problem is solved, yet you would rather go on and on and on trying to prove that your point is the correct point and whatever it was that was said is not to your liking. /ignore, problem solved.

So what you are saying is its better for a parent to hover over the computer while a child plays so they can individually ignore players who do not follow the established rules rather then expect the adults playing to simply follow the established rules? And what about the ladies that would rather not have to read the offensive conversations? Are they wrong in expecting others to follow the published rules? Or should they too have to choose to ignore as well? I think we both have different views on what is or is not appropriate around women and children and I feel the "ignore" button is not a solution to someone that has no respect for others.

In the end, the game rules allow members achieve a balance between getting what they want and respecting others. They allow all members get along better. Lastly, rules are effective only if they are enforced. When you decide on a rule, also decide what will happen if the rule is broken. First offense when a rule is broken may simply be a reminder of the rule and give them another chance. Further offenses may require greater action.

so it takes too much effort to type /ignore or hit a button ? and you may find it offensive, i may find it funny... who is right ? you have all the power in the world to get rid of anything you do not like. /ignore.

It takes less effort to respect others and follow the rules established by the game developers.

3) @ ISRJimmys last comment, sure... in a perfect world but we all know that is hardly the case. You cant monitor your kids 24/7 but you should take interest in anything they do so if they are using the internet I'd definitely be monitoring chat sites they use, especially ones that are just open public such as games etc. The thing about common sense is its not that common...
4) The developers cant patrol chat 100% of the time, therefore we will always have someone abusing rules and such and thats exactly why theres an ignore option. If that still doesnt seem like enough to make your heart content then report abuse thru the proper channels that are made available to us.

Now this statement here, offends me. does it break any rules set forth by the GMs ? or admins ? doubt it. so if 10 ppl find this offensive and 10 ppl find it spot on, who is correct ? we can banter back and forth for 10 pages and get no where, OR those of us who find this offensive or in poor taste ...we can... wait for it... IGNORE them. problem solved.

I did not write this post to rant and rave. I wrote it so that people who do have a problem with the chat can discuss, debate, observe, learn or simply add their opinion. That is what forums are for.

Tarquinious I agree with you for the most part, in most cases the ignore button is the best choice, both in chat and on the forums. If your children do not know how to use it, then learning how to /ignore someone would be a condition of them being able to play. You cannot monitor your children 24/7, but checking in on them every once in awhile and scrolling the chat log can tell you a lot! Including whether or not your child was participating in something offensive. It does not help to have your child totally sheltered from the real world. If you can monitor your child enough to see that they are mature enough to ignore things that are inappropriate and not participate in them, then as a parent you are doing an excellent job, gratz!

I did not post the statement about being mentally unstable or mentally ill to offend anyone. I posted it to point out that when someone goes above and beyond the rules, even after several warnings by GM's, that there is an underlying issue and arguing with them does not help. I stand by my statement. People who refuse to comply with rules usually have got a mental illness, or are mentally unstable - ie they thrive on the conflict that they cause and arguing with them only makes it worse. Notice i said usually, not always If the truth offends you I can't help that.

My point is that the chat room rules are set by the GM's, not by the players. If you do not like what is going on in chat, then use /ignore. Everyone has a different level of tolerance, and expecting a group of people to adjust to your level just because you are present is asking too much. If rules are being broken then report them (always capture the screen by hitting Shift+PrntScrn, then pasting it into paint and saving it). If the chat is not breaking rules, but you do not like the subject than ignore is the best solution.

If you are the only one talking about a certain subject and no one is participating, and people are telling you to stop, then it may be a good idea to just stop. But if a group of people are all participating and it falls within the rules, then you should respect the people who are having fun and just ignore them. The chat window can always be closed, or you could switch to your guild tab, or even the help tab.

While some may find certain subjects offensive, I find it just as offensive when someone tells me or someone else what they can and cannot say in global chat. If I am not breaking rules and just having fun with other players, then they have no right to tell me what to do. If i am offended by someone in chat i ignore them or report it. If rules are being broken I let someone know they can be banned if they do not stop, just as a warning in case they are not aware of the rules. If they continue i simply report them, then put them on ignore and let the GM's deal with it.

Bottom line: unless rules are clearly being broken, don't try to force others to change their behavior. problem solved!

Everyone is allowed their opinion, however if you have ever worked with people who are mentally ill you would know that one of the signs of mental illness is the inability to control ones behavior ie not able to comply to rules.

Behavior that is getting in the way of life is a sign that someone should be diagnosed for possible mental illness. And yes, I'm on hiatus from the game for several reasons, however I've had time today to catch up some old things, and this was one of the places I wanted to visit. Your problem with that is....?

Back pedaling hardly, all i did was clarify for you so that you could maybe understand it. Every time you post you show just how ignorant you are on the subject, yet you still try to defend yourself. A true man would admit he didn't know what he was talking about, misunderstood and just move on.

while people are trolling each other in this thread and being derogatory to unfortunate people with an illness, its been pointed out a few times. if you disagree with something a person(s) says ingame, just use the /ignore function thats the reason it was placed ingame. while i do find the ignore tool a pain to use (chat really needs a dropmenu box for easier use, or /ignore should be in the right click menu of people)

ultimately it is not the fault of the game/company or staff if people fail to provide proper monitoring and support for their children while said child is online. many people blame game companies for their child(s) picking up unsafe/healthy habits or views from their usage of the internet. and it ultimately boils down to the parent(s) not caring enough to limit/monitor what the child(s) is viewing/reading or learning online from their social interaction with other people.

if you feel the chat in CEO is too "colourful" for your child, i would either A) not allow them to play it or B) see about disabling their chat viewing if possible. if you do not wish to use the ingame ignore tools. it is not the job of Ubisoft or its staff to monitor the chat for people's children, nor is it upto the players ingame to watch their language for other people and their kids. this is a massively multiplayer online game. expecting everyone to favor and follow your view is narrow-minded as everyone is and should be allowed to behave any way they wish (within the game rules naturally) to say a person can not swear ingame (if its allowed via rules) is unfair to that person who is now being told how to behave ingame against their wishes.

now i might not have any kids or the like, as well as spent enough time as a GM in an mmo to know people will dance around the game rules in the grey area to break as many rules as possible without breaking them, but they really wont care about anyone's kids its not their problem or job to worry about a person's kids upbringing as most of older generation are used to "colourful" language from our peers in our own upbringing.

unless Ubisoft makes it a rule you can not and should not expect the player base to give two cents about anything they say ingame. as well you should not expect Ubisoft and its staff to make rules for your children. as this game is a social based by allowing your children to play it you must be willing to accept they will be prevy to "colourful" language or opinion from other players, through no fault of anyone. if you are worried about what your children may or may not see, dont let them play.

mind you i have seen pretty "colourful" language in childrens games. soo to be honest kids will learn inappropriate language regardless of what you do. i know from my own background, school was a great place to learn swear words and other "colourful" sayings...

Thats why I posted what I did about you trolling and being on hiatus from the game as your siggy says. You are on hiatus but you will still log onto a forum and leave posts like that with no further explanation? thats a troll, think about it. That was just plain rude and you could have explained yourself on why you thought that at the very least, not just see how many posts you can put on a forum for a game...

Guys, maybe we could all take 5 minutes and a deep breath and try and use the /ignore on the forum and not just on the chat, instead of being offensive?

That is why the function of /report username reason was added to the game. Person reported. /ignoreadd username, now the person is ignored. Then it is time to get on with your game play. :)

Thank you Cahalith, i was told by a GM they would love to have the screenshots i made regarding the situation. Unfortuantely i did not see anywhere i could send the screenshots, and hoped someone here (Ubi, RR, BB, Mod) could help me. =)

Also, there are things that crosses a fine line, when i am being attacked on a sexual level (yes my private parts were mentioned and what i could do with them). not only was it highly inapropriate for a game chat, but crosses a line "ignore" jsut doesnt cover.

If you allow one player to sexually cyber assault you, others tend to follow them, knowing you will do nothing but take it.

In order to submit screenshots, you have to fill out a help ticket. There is a drop down for reporting harrasment, or you can just send it to a general topic and explain what you need to report. When the person investigating your ticket responds, you can attach screenshots that way.

Both are infested with players who do not know how to communicate on a public channel with out someone slapping their hands, saying "you've crossed a line". I will not go to either channel until the rampant abuses of chat are brought under control. I have guild chat, and that is where I am going to spend my time.

I thank you very much for the information, that was very helpful.

it began when 2 players were debating over unfair trades that were cheating players. one player remained calm, while the other began to name call, then came the obscenities, the came the homophobic slurs, and then the sexual comment.

It gets rough some times, but no need to act like a street thug. ;)

I fully agree with the original poster that some chat rules need to be laid down, followed, and enforced. This is certainly a problem in other MMOs, not just this game. When confronted with their inappropriate chat, the first response from those responsible for the inappropriate chat I have seen is generally to blame someone else: I am an adult and deserve to say whatever I wish, and the GMs need to restrict the children playing this game because it's really the kids' faults for reading what I wrote; it's the parent's responsibility, they should know better than to let their children play computer games without scrutinizing every second and aspect of gameplay; people need to be more tolerant of me pushing my "adult" views and language in chat, it's their fault for being too sensitive; if the developers of the game really cared they would punish me, so as long as they don't take action or much action then that makes what I'm doing ok; if people don't like what I have to say, it's their problem and they should use ignore or not use chat...

All right people. You're adults? Take some responsibility for your words and your actions. I am an adult, and I feel that I have a right not to be exposed to some of the absolutely horrible things that people talk about in chat. I have a right to play a computer game and not have to read through chat that is openly supportive of or riddled with sexism, racism, misogyny, lewdness, violence, or abusive language. It doesn't matter what age you are, these topics can be and are harmful in varying degrees. I absolutely believe that children deserve and have the right to be shielded from this harm, and I believe that as an adult I have the right to say, "No, I do not have to roll over and tolerate this!". I can ignore someone, sure... but for every new day there is a new person spewing textual obscenities in chat, and the ignore function really didn't help the overall situation. I can close the chat window, and cut myself off from that portion of gameplay... but I shouldn't have to, as I have just as much right to use it as anyone. I'm not the one abusing chat, so why should my gameplay be restricted because of those who do?

So please, GMs start enforcing some "common" decency in chat. Gamers, please do the mature thing and take responsibility for your words. Contain these things to private conversations and don't force your abusive chat on everyone else playing the game. Your fellow human beings deserve better. Thanks.

Just a thought but the /ignore button is a "reaction". A parent or person who may see the need to use this is in vast cases too late and whatever damage has been done. Our U.S. server is very different then the EURO, we have no MODS present to help make the game experiance enjoyable for all. You can have fun conversations without being perverted or disgusting. Players policing themselves never works.

I can guarantee you that if zeus server had mods like the euro server............everyone would be enjoying global-1 and help tab. they make you do trade announcements in a separate global chat as well as recruiting for guilds is done on the forums and they seem to have a zero tolerance for idiocy.

Yes... The Euro Server has just about no troubles in global or help.. I can actually care on a peaceful conversation in the global over there.

I am beginning to think we need to take this petition to a more visible place, like Facebook. We are just not being heard here. More like, bah its just the US server, who cares?
1 year has gone by and little or nothing has been done to curb the constant abuses I see in chat.

Yep I agree.. this thread is from LAST YEAR and little changes have been done to make the chat better.

Ive found myself finding it much more beneficial to hang out in the Help channel most of the time. People actually talk about the game and seem more mature. :)
