Maxing capacity

I read this on a different post but didnt want to hijack that with a debatable question. Why would you want to max your capacity in a resource? That to me is simply not using your overproduced resources. I personally feel that selling them for even any profit is better then hoarding them. I honestly do not see the point of 19k fir logs if you have a balance of consumption. I guess what I am looking for is someone who does hoard post the general reasoning. Thanks.

Example I do not have extra farms producing wheat to trade, i consume all my wheat (with a net of around 2 per day) that I feel is maximizing a resource. I might understand a weapon as battle plans for adventures might call for a different unit, Motherly love, by way of example eats ~350 cav, so having enough to cover that (8k) is good to have before hand, (and I think there is a different adventure that eats 550 cav) but that is about the only reason I would personally see to have that many.

Just a question I guess, and I know to each their own, but i dont get hoarding and am looking for help understanding that point of view. Thanks.

It is good to run a buffer/cusion on goods that come from resources that expire, such as copper, wheat, water, etc. But I generally don't let anything but water max and that is because water has such a short production time that it can swing wildly in over production to being all out. For the extra settler or two of over production I can be covered in case things start cascading down hill, you still replace wells at the same rate, you just have some cusion. It might be smart to run a bit of excess so that you can capitalize on trade opprotunities or help out a guildie but yes in general running massive stores on everything can also make you miss those opprotunities as you dont have the cap space to store stuff.

Wheat/Water when we get closer to pvp weapons.

Water you cap because wells don't continuously produce. Well consumption reduces and its easier to maintain max water.
Wheat... well I choose to because I see silos as a waste of resources/space. I can go a very long time w/o rebuilding fields if need be why waste that space for a silo where I can fit another farm.
Weapons once we get closer to pvp... well you don't bring a fist to a sword fight...

I appreciate all the replies, I guess I wont see the other side of hoarding because simply I just don't get it. I would go into economical benefits of trade but it just does not seem worth it. So just imagine that i did lecture on the benefits of trade and keep posting trades.

the thing with hoarding is just the fact that you can. you eventually build so many storehouses that you have a huge storage space. also, there will always be a time when someone eventually becomes a hoarder. if you have a net of 2 wheat per day, everything else that takes wheat will start to pile up unless you burn through it constantly. the stables, breweries, and mills will eventually fill up when start filling up using your population to make cavalry units.

i personally stockpile because i can't spend every 10 minutes of my day in this game to conduct trades and whatnot. since i also work, i need to stockpile on things so my economy can function without me having to monitor it so often.

I have a friend playing this game who is a hoarder. I also play Lord of Ultima with him, I explained optimal building configurations, game strategies etc, and at the end of the day he just enjoys gathering piles of resources so he can put them into his money bin and then swim around in it. Earlier today I saw his city when we were talking about some bandit fights he is gearing up for and I saw him maxed out at 21k or something crazy on a ton of the resources. His city is far from upgraded, but he doesn't care, he just likes having tons of stuff on hand to do whatever he wants with whenever he feels like it. He isn't concerned about maximizing his production or being efficient/balanced, which are some of my objectives in the game. For some people it is just their play style and there really isn't a deeper meaning to it, they don't have the same objectives as I do in a game like this.

I happen to enjoy trading at certain times. When they are in need, l like helping friends and guildmates. I also have fun upgrading buildings on a whim, just to see what it would look like in my island. Though not often, I move buildings to try out a different layout. In all these, I do not worry much about impact on resources. That's because of hoarding.

I used to play by balancing production. I accomplished this to a certain extent. I then found that having no excess resources deprived me of other activites. I could not trade, nor help others. Upgrade and building moves became a concern as these usually upset the balance I so carefully planned for. By depriving myself of these activities, the game became boring. That's when I realized that a balanced production sucks (for me)! I turned around and changed my play style to excess production, as much as can be produced with every reasource.

Still some ways to go, but now, I can do a lot more when the mood takes me. For certain resources, I do hit the cap at times, but then I find it more enjoyable to get rid of excess (or upgrading storage) than scrambling to get resources that is in immediate need. Hoarding is really not the goal here, but a result. zugzug is right. When you don't have unlimited play time, resources pile up. I'd rather have a hoard of resources than none. Given the choice, I would not go back to balanced production.
