Then the cake would not get digested and just sit in your stomach until you die.

Then we'd all lose.

If there was no more gems we would have chaos across the lands. Settlers would cannon the lakes for fish, brewers would roll barrels in the fields attempting to make crop signs. Water mills would be picketed due to contractual obligations not being met.
