Avoid running attacks that require retreats or complicated blocking during peak time. The lag makes it difficult to get the timing right.

I am only a newbie,
but in simple words, use all the 200 people, it can always make better defend.
before each sector move your garrison as close to the action as you can so you dont have to wait so long.
I am still in the learning process myself. What I have definitely come to appreciate is the battle simulator. You have several scenarios that take place and this has saved me many troops, that I was just wasting in earlier attacks. This has saved me troops and works to a players advantage. Now it may take some time to find the best outcomes, but being patient and using the simulator will save troops, resources, and help you move to your next level, which is what we are all looking for. So look at the enemies troops, compare first attackers vs normal attackers and who is leading the attack. Then utilize your troops in the most effective manner. Most importantly... Have fun with it! After all, this is a game.
Remember it is always better to have more than one general ready. best thing to have is a decoy general who goes there to weaken the camp for your other generals (this works best for island clearing except on chuck and metal-tooth you want to use militia ) usually i fill my decoy general with recruits cause they are cheep in beer and not time consuming. Also remember a 250 has a much higher chance of winning a battle and loosing less men. remember have fun.
the 250 troop general is probably the best thing you could invest in getting. It will allow you to complete most fights that you'd have do in waves. It'll save you a lot of time and a lot of troop losses.
use the 250 general for maximum pwnage
1. Learn how to use a combat simulator. Even when using adventure guides, you will come across situations where you might have to get creative. E.g. using a different type of unit than what is exactly listed in an adventure guide.
2. Upgrade your barracks. You will soon realize that you cannot do adventures fast enough if you cannot build up troops quickly.
3. Check and double check that you are sending the correct number of troops by closing the general window and opening it again. Sometimes, the "OK" button doesn't do its job or you get lag.
4. It is very easy to lose a lot of troops if a trap camp or an unexpected camp intercepts you. Make sure you check for trap camps in a guide map and make sure your general is following the path you thought it would follow. Do not attack and walk away from the map if the general will be walking by any camps you don't want to attack so that you can retreat if needed.
Most importantly, remember that it's a game. If you accidentally lose 200 cavs, don't smash your keyboard through your monitor.

I suggest using one hundred and twenty five swordsmen along with seventy five horses to get a very powerful force to take out almost any other first strike units.
If your first starting out the easiest way to win is just to double the amount of recruits you have vs what the enemy camp has.
