With the memorial day weekend fast approaching we wanted to compile a list of Battle Pro Tips that the Noobility of the Settlers Online can execute in their next daunting battle. These pro tips can be simple one liners or extravagant strategies. Anything that will help the new players on the Settlers Online with the combat system. Who knows, maybe we will save a lot of troops with these tips!

Check your general's pathing to make sure he will get to the intended target without being intercepted along the way.

Remember to use the 250 general (sometimes even if you lose him). 250 recruits wins a lot of fights.

Always check the cost of not blocking compared to blocking; risking 200 crossbowmen to save 12 recruits is not worth it.

For those just learning combat or starting adventures, here are the top tips I learned from poking around the forums or from trial and error:

Some battles take more than one "wave," which means more than one attack. Your general will be wounded after the first wave, and will need time to recover (4 hours is standard). All your troops from the first wave will be lost. If you buy a second general from the Tavern, you can send your next wave immediately with troops assigned to that general's garrison.

If you always move your "assigned units" counters down to zero when the garrisons are at rest, every garrison will always display total troops available.

In an adventure, you can send multiple garrisons and reassign troops among them by moving the "assigned units" counters down to zero and then picking them up where you want them.

You can make settlers with bread in the provision house and keep them stored in your star menu, so you can immediately order replacement troops after losses without waiting for your population to increase.

This game has many highly experienced players who have battled and documented just about every scenario that exists. Search the forums for the boss or leader you are trying to defeat, or the adventure you want to try, and study the pro guides to learn how they recommend doing it with the fewest losses.

Agreed, after you come up with a battle plan, run it through a combat simulator to make sure you will win or you at least know what your minimum and maximum losses and odds will be.

1. Learn how to implement the "blocking" strategy. It will save you troops in the long run.

2. Enemy units come in First Strike, Normal and Last Strike in thier attack priority. Knowing the composition of the strike priority of the camp you are attacking can determine what units you yourself should send.

3. Observe if enemy units favour attacking weaker units first, as these enemy units will attack low health units such as Cavalry, Longbowmen, Cannons, Crossbowmen, which are all time consuming and expensive to replace.

4. Some enemy First Strike units attack weaker units first, and others have normal attack. against the ones with Normal attack you can use your Cavalry with a few Recruits to soak up the damage.

This post outlines the order of attack for different scenarios. Once you "get" this part, it becomes easier to plan what troops to train.

Be sure you understand the attributes of your troops as well as the attributes of the various bandits. For example
a Scavenger is going to be the first bad guy you'll have to deal with. If you click on the bandit camp then hover
your mouse over his picture, you'll get the following information about Scavengers:

Hitpoints: 40
Damage: 15-30
Accuracy: 60%
Initiative: normal

Hitpoints tells you what it will take to kill a Scavenger. The higher the hitpoints, the harder it is to kill a given
bandit type (and the same is true for your own troops). Damage & Accuracy work together to tell you how
strong a fighter he is. Put another way, Hitpoints are what this guy can take. Damage and Accuracy are what
he can dish out.

Here's the description for your Recruits:

Hitpoints: 40
Damage: 15-30
Accuracy: 80%
Initiative: Normal

When a Recruit attacks, he will either inflict 15 hitpoints (HP) worth of damage or he will inflict 30 HP. Accuracy
is 80%, so if you have 10 recruits, ON AVERAGE you can expect 8 of them to score 30 HP and the other 2 to
only score 15. Note I said ON AVERAGE. If you had a zillion recruits, they would certainly score the higher
number close to 80% of the time. But since we only have 10, it's quite possible that 9 of them will have a
good hit, or 7 of them, or even none of them! You won't know for sure until the battle is over, so always try
to have a few extra guys on your team.

So back to that scavenger for a moment. Let's say your first recruit is a bad shot and scores 15HP. The scavenger
is now wounded, and has remaining health of 40-15= 25HP. Now Recruit#2 takes a shot. If he scores 30 HP, the
scavenger will die (25 remaining HP - 30 HP = -5 HP). Note the extra 5 HP will be lost. If he misses, the
scavenger will again lose some health, but will still be alive to return fire (25 remaining HP - 15HP = 10 HP).

So, in summary, HITPOINTS tells you how much damage a fighter can TAKE. DAMAGE & ACCURACY tell you how
much damage a fighter can DISH OUT. ACCURACY is only a guide, and your results may be better or worse.

When attacking, a general may not follow the path that is intended. If he diverts, RETREAT! So, pay attention to every battle.. or, you will be sorry.

Know your enemy.

In other words; Pay attention to the types of troops you are sending your own troops up against. Don't send weak troops (ranged, cavalry) up against troops that attack your weakest without expecting massive losses on your side.

When you are fighting against dogs... put other troops along with your cavalry in the fight... and keep the HP LOWER than the Cavalry and the dogs will attack the lower units. the dos will attack the lowest HP and work their way up.... that way you get the bonus of attacking first+ you don;'t get your Cavalry killed... this works best with the 250 general... and you have an extra 50 guys to absorb hits...

Get to know the various battle/combat simulators so you can choose the one that matches your playing style and produces reliable results. The simulator you choose will be your advisor and staff. A successful general never goes to battle without them...

When a general returns to the garrison, immediately remove all troops. This way, you can avoid any chance of accidentally sending something you didn't mean to.

Also, don't try tricky blocks for the first time when you are three sheets to the wind!

If the enemy has a lot of first strike units, save your bowmen and just use tougher units. the first strike units will always go after your weaker troops so it is a good idea to keep your bowmen out of cavalry heavy battles.

Sometimes you can beat the bandits if you have less people than him as long as the damage you do is great than what he deals

If you have time on your hands, don't be afraid to send in a whole army of recruits as fodder. Even though they are weaker than most troops, they are the cheapest to produce (2000 bswords and 1000 brew for a full army) and can be used to weaken camps so your more expensive troops can wipe them out with minimal casualties.

In woodworking the rule is always: Measure twice, cut once.

In Settlers battles make your rule: Always check twice, attack once.

Check that you have the right troops. Check the combat sims. Check your generals path against agro zones of enemy camps. Check that you are attacking the right camp. Check for traps.

It takes a little longer to do the checking, but it prevents bad losses of your troops.

use mostly soldiers,recruits and cav. also make sure to always make your troops way in advance and to have extra cooking never know when u will need them also save your gems to get the vet. general.

The area of aggro that a bandit camp has works like this:
The FIRST area of aggro that your general steps into is the camp he will attack first.
If it's his intended target, he will only attack that camp, even if he steps into another area of aggro, and then return home.
If he steps into another camp's area of aggro and it's NOT the intended target, he will attack that camp, and then continue on to the intended target. (If he steps into ANOTHER camps aggro area before he steps into the aggro area of the intended target, he'll attack that camp as well. This is bad if you didn't mean to attack these other camps, but can be used to your advantage in some cases, to create chain attacks.)
The moral of the story is ~ Click on the bandit camps to see the aggro areas before you attack, and plan accordingly.

*Side note - areas of aggro only work on attacking generals, not generals who are retreating or transferring a garrison. You can walk right through any aggro area in both these cases.

Always stay alert to you adventure guides, combat simulator, path of your general, and to the number and description of you troops before sending them for each battle.

Your general (Normal, BH, Reaper or Veteran) attacks for 120 damage each round.

My simple tip is to just have more troops then the army you are goint to fight

Use Cavalry against dogs and intercepting wolves. I use thirteen loade Generals; two Veteran the rest Hardened and regular General. Use Generals to move troops to the adventure. Remember Wheat produces brew which is essential to producing troops and bread which is essential to producing population of retired bandits at the provision building. Stock up brew - bread - population - arms - troops. Retired General officers Staff Member.

Use Cav to wipe out archers and opposing Cav.
Use Infantry to absorb Damage.
Use Archers as Skirmish Units to lower opposing Inf numbers.
Learn Bosses attack sequence, sometimes like Metal tooth have to use Cav to wipe out Numerous archer units Behind Boss HP absorbtion before sending in Infantry to Finish Boss.
Some Bosses Get attacked last in Sequence So can mount a varied offensive before attacking boss.

Dont let the Dogs eat your Bowmen/Longbowmen/XBowmen

I personally would never sacrificed a cavalry unit to dogs, recruits can absorb their damage easily with very few losses, and they can then be killed, saving your more expensive cavalry for battles with low hit-point regular strike units. Each dog will typically kill 1 cavalry. My advice is to use Recruits for dogs. If you have the generals to spare send a first wave with just a few more recruits than the number of dogs. This wipes out the dogs entirely, and spares your cavalry. (Always check the battle simulator to calculate exactly how many recruits are needed to wipe out the dogs.)

My battle tip is measure the bandit camp you are going to attack before, in order to minimize the damage to your more expensive units. Always sacrifice your recruits!

Looks like everything was pretty much covered, so a quick synopsis - Know thy enemy ( Click on the enemy to see waht his units are and their stats ), use a combat simulator ( Add it to your favorites in windows, right click on it and you can select 'open in new window' and play around with it without closing your game ), Pay attention to your generals pathing and retreat if you get intercepted, overkill, overkill, overkill - DO use a cannon to kill a mosquito in this game ( If you can eliminate the enemy in one round, you take much fewer casualties ), Chuck is a front line unit. You won't hit any of his other units until he is dead, so the first wave has to be able to take him out ( Unless you do a cavalry wave first ), Buy the 250 general, he's worth it, last, but not least, have fun - always remember, this is a game.

Always count damage needed to kill oppenent trups in 1st round of combat, so you want loose more troops in secound round of combat. Always goes like this and you want loose more troops then needed.

When fighting the swamp witch, I use Calvary and Recruits until the next to last battle, I switch from recruits to Solders. Always have 150 cal and 100 R or S. This is my favorite adventure. I's quick and easy.

Always be careful where you place the garrison, Garrison placement has alot to do with where your general will go.. follow your general make sure he is going to the intended target, If not RETREAT as soon as possible, sometimes the retreat button does not work, immediately close the the garrison reopen, retreat again...Use battle Sim and guides higher level players have out there. I use StarFire and SIdV's guides, very well made and helpful, both have minimum losses. Always try to use Recruits when possible, it saves moeny when you have to replace them. Make settlers in the provision house with bread so you can replace the military you lost right away.

Horseback is very do-able with only recruits. if you have the veteran.

Milita makes for better cannon fodder than soldiers...they do equal damage, M is cheaper

Be wary of server lag and glitches when blocking.

Having two Vets is better than having just one :)

Two tips for newbies, based on my own newbie mistakes:

1) After you get all your units assigned in the garrison, be sure to click "okay" to save that setup before clicking on "attack." One time I rushed and clicked attack before saving, and I sent far fewer troops into battle than I intended (which obviously resulted in a loss).

2) I guess I didn't read the guides, because I didn't know for a long time that you can move your garrison closer to the battle zone. Use the "transfer" option and you can position the garrison anywhere within your own territory. (It took my poor general forever to march to his battles before I figured this out, lol).

Always make sure you know if there are any wolf camps, because they will eat your cavalry for lunch.

Do not spend gems on resources!!!

Adventure Buddies and Buffing Buddies will help you advance fast through the levels,
Choose a production line early on so you don't have the cost of rebuilding your island.
Stay around players that are your level, to share resources better.
Use those gaming tools out there, it will help you understand the game better.

make sure that u have a good amount of troops in several areas that can help each other while fighting. Also check at what ur against ; if its rock throwers or rangers i suggest u have that many if not more ranged units on ur side. Same for melee units.

In the "Old Friends" adventure you can move you're troops to the other side of the Island by the "Bone church" NOTE: you can only move 2 Generals to the other side of the Island. Once you get them there you can attack every camp around the Bone Church, you can then go attack the Bone Church and then the "Witch Tower" to avoid serious losses when attacking Bone Church send:1st 200R, 2nd 50R 50M 100LB => Loss: 220R to 225R when attacking line up you're Generals and time the attack from both Generals to go into the Bone Church at the same time. If executed properly both Generals will return.

Usually you only fight with one or two generals. Have the rest of your generals drop their troops on the adventure island and return to your island and load up with fresh troops. Your fighting general can reload these troops and keep fighting without having to return to your island. Even though my 250 general can travel twice as fast as a regular general, I use him to fight with because he can have more recruits to absorb punishment and protect the more expensive troops. A meatshield as it were. I always keep the appropriate adventure guide open in a second tab, so I can refer to it with a single click.
