Recently I have noticed (visiting friends) some buffs are the usual vertical sparkles, and some are golden swirls. Are the swirl buffs from friends, or x3, or longer duration, or what?

They are from friends, the swirls that is.
Bufs from friends are golden colored & last 1.5 times as long as bufs you apply to your buildings.
