Longbow Men
Is there a tool or guide explaining what each of the troop types are most effective against? I ask this specifically because my longbow men don't seem to be very effective in battles against bandit camps regardless of what type of enemy they are fighting.
Thank you,
Chris

Compare them directly to bowmen. Longbow men have a higher min max damage and a greater chance to do max damage. Just as with bowmen, longbow men will need some other type of unit to protect them such as recruits. Also when your army has both longbow men and bow men the the bow men will be attacked and killed first. Just be careful to never send this type of troop against dogs or other units that always strike the weakest unit first.

I honestly believe missile troops should have first strike.

Generally:
"Melee" units: Recruits, Militia, Soldiers, Elite Soldiers, any enemies with high HP.
"Archer" units: Bowmen, Longbowmen, Crossbowmen, any enemies with low HP and high damage.
"Cavalry" units: Cavalry, any enemies with low HP, first strike, and "attack the weakest".
"Boss" units: any enemies with really high HP, really high damage, and "splash damage".
"Artillery" units: Cannoneers, any enemies with reasonably high HP, last strike, and very high damage.
Generally (there are a lot of exceptions, watch out for them!):
Cavalry>Archers
Archers>Melee
Melee>Cavalry
Archers+Artillery>Boss
Archers>Artillery
Of course, every enemy demands its own precise setup of troops to defeat it. Also, most of the setups above will also require melee units to shield the units that are going to be having the most effect (such as Melee+Cavalry>Archer, Melee+Archer+Artillery>Boss, etc.).

Troops are only as effective as the rest of the setup. In almost no cases you should place only longbows in your setup. If there is no enemy with the "attack weakest" skill in the camp, but bandits with high amount of XP longsbows can usually be combined with some recruits, the recruits will get the hits from the enemies and the longbows, which have very low HP but higher damage, kill them.
Also with enemies with "attack weakest" skill longbows can be used, usually you place some bows for this enemies so they will kill your bows and leave your longbows alone.
To get an idea about how to combine troops watch the battle reports and you can also use a battle sim:
