I find myself buying almost 10K coal a week. What's the best way to maximize my own coal production? I have the six coal mines running almost continuously (need time to prospect for them, 2 geologists). I also have three level 2 and one level 3 coking plants running continuously (330 coal/day).
Should I spend the 150 tools on the Level 1 mines?
Turn them into level 3 and buff them?
I'm level 31.
well you need more coking plants.
I have 6 level 3 coking plants and I run the 6 coal mines as well and I run a small surplus, but I'm only level 37 with moderate needs.
At higher levels you will need more coking plants, seriously.
You can also get up to 3 recycling plants (like a coking plant only better, doesn't use up resources)
You could also check your production chains, there may be buildings you no longer need to run that use up coal (for me I no longer run my iron weaponsmith)
I made all four coking plants level 3. Now I am at 464/12hr (was 330/12hr). That adds 2,000wk. Building two more level 3 coking would give another 3,500/wk but then I need pinewood chain to support and I'm out of licenses.
This is just a little strange. Real civilizations abandon coking as soon as coal becomes available. Coking is incredibly inefficient compared to mining coal.
I currently run 5 Lv 3 Coking Plants, 2 Lv 2 Coal Mines and a Lv 3 Coal Mine to keep up with my demand. It's Tool-intensive but it's the only way I can keep enough Coal flowing with the limited Building Licenses I have.

Abandoned for industrial purposes. My great, great grandfather lost a fortune when his coking plants were rendered obsolete by coal mining.
Reading wikipedia I see that we have the wrong uses for coke and charcoal.

Coke is made from coal. So they should be charcoal plants - charcoal is made from wood. But you don't use charcoal to make iron, you use coke. So my great grandfather must have had charcoal plants.
At lvl 31 the only thing I can think of is that you production chains are off. Maybe you built 1 too many other coal using buildings too quickly.Quote:

It's not an exact science, I find it best to get really familiar with the in game "economy overview", as you click on things in there you can get more and more detailed info about what is using what resources and hopefully plan for it.
A short term solution would likely be to sleep some of those coal using buildings (at least some of the times), until you can get more licenses to build more pinewood cutters/foresters and coking plants.
Lv 49 and I have all 6 coal mines at lv2 -- 5 lv5 coking plants, 3 lv4 coking plants, and 3 lv3 coking plants. 16 pine cutters, 21 foresters.
But now you don't start getting gems until lv40 -- so licenses are hard to come by -- and 54 licences for coal can seem like a lot.
Yup....seems like with the more recent changes to the game the devs are trying to slow the game down somewhat. I personally don't think that's a bad thing just a change.Quote:

For coal, I currently generate just over 4k coal every 12 hours and that just barely covers my need: 2 steel weaponsmith, 2 bronze weaponsmith, 4 tool makers and the iron and bronze smelting needed for all that. I don't make Iron weapons any more, and gold is still too expensive to get into yet.
Here's what I have (recyclers are the same output as cokers)
10 cokers total (2 lvl 3, 2 lvl 2)
5 recyclers (1 lvl 3, 1 lvl 2)
3 coal mines (all lvl 1)
I experimented with more coal mines and leveling them up to have less cokers, but the drain on tools was too high for me. Rebuilding iron mines is a big drain on tools already for me. Also, spured by the Christmas thing, I just switched over two cokers to recyclers which freed up a TON of building licenses, so right now I'm good. I know I could up my coal mine usage, but I'm saving that coal mining capacity for when I start other coal projects like maybe gold coin production.
I have 6 level 3 mines, 10 level 4 cokers, and 3 level 4 recyclers. Now, i do not run the mines at all unless i get in a pinch. Normally i produce 28K per day, and it keeps me stocked. When the gold chain is running, stock will drop a bit; but it recovers quickly enough. I do not run any iron smelters, steel smelters, iron swordsmiths, or steel swordsmiths at all.
It does require a lot of foresters and pice cutters; but since I don't use a lot of pinewood planks anymore, I don't have very many sawmills.
Get reyclers, 1 is available now for this xmas event.
I have the 6 coal mines upgraded to level 2 each time (I also occasionally buff them) + five level 4 coking plants and one level 3 as well as a level 3 recycler.
My total coal production all buffed is 15022 / 12 hrs
Unforunately I use 12k coal per 12 hours while my gold chain is running. Not sure what it is without.
If you have the extra tools it is always good to upgrade the mines, but I wouldn't go past level 2.
If you still have a coal shortage, like others have suggested, build more coking plants.
If you need more pinewood logs, just build more cutters and upgrade them. I have to occasionally buff my cutters to make sure I have enough logs to burn.
Suffice it to say, with mainly level 4 cutters, buffing them for a couple of hours with some sams once every day or two isn't so bad. I can easily manage to keep my warehouse near full capacity for both logs and coal. :)
