Don't forget to build up your economy. Adventuring levels you up, but it is expensive.
Dont discount buying a gem pit if you are going to be a money player, it is well worth it if you can get two of them and work increasing the number of them.
If you have a shortage of marble and hardwood in the beginning but have a little extra building time, the lower level wheat fields and water wells are far cheaper than the level 2+ fields and wells and still have considerable resources. You can also build level 1 wheat fields at the prime locations for harvesting and then level 2+ fields at the secondary harvest locations so that when your not around they're less likely to run out.
If you get stuck with a guild quest that requires you to do an adventure that you really do not want to do, remember that you can pay a small amount of gems for instant completion. This will save you from the wrath of your guildmates AND the unhappy adventure.
ADVENTURE GUIDES - My Guides are written for all different Generals and Sends. For beginners and seasoned players not using block methods as well.
I've designed a gradual approach to blocking, for those interested in learning, my guides are focused on confidence building to graduate to the advanced guides by Tage guides and others.

First, there are comments before mine condemning what was posted here.
I respond I saw many comments I agree with. So to those who posted here, most of you I agree with. Thank you for posting them.
Second, I won't disclose my best tip, and I hope no one else does either. That said, this was the most freeing move I made playing this game in the few months that I have: turn off your iron smelters, steel smelters, and iron and steel sword makers, once you banked say 2000 iron and 2000 steel swords.
They devour coal.
Once you banked enough iron and steel swords, you will acquire more from adventures and the quests Settlers Online provides.
It is pure joy not to be out of coal. I continually rebuild four coal mines, and three coal smelters, and have had coal maxed at 23,000 for several weeks now.
Before all my coal-dependent production kept shutting down when I was away from the game. I was buying coal with gold to stop all that downtime.
Now all I make are bronze swords, while my coal is endless.
When a quest requires I produce iron or steel swords, I just turn the buildings on again temporarily.
Some mines, like copper/iron/coal, are best leveled up to at least level 2 each time they are rebuilt. The cost is only tools and minimal tools at that.
There are a few benefits to upgrading your buildings.
1) Production increases.
2) it's a good way to equalize your economy without having to waste building licenses.
3) Less buffs to use.
4) when you don't have any more building license for new building types due to "build spamming" you can destroy one building type and compensate by upgrading a building of the same kind so your economy doesn't suffer.
Stay focused and it is just a game.
