When starting do what is needed for the Quests only. That way your not waiting to gather more resources for future Quest, and level up quicker. Also don't spend your Gems until you get a quest for it :)
Protip - xbow daily login reward sucks.
After your initial enthusiasm wears off and you get sick of planting wheatfields, I would highly recommend silos. If you balance your farming economy (took me forever, but my silo levels = my farm levels and walk times are balanced), you can go from daily planting to limited planting to never planting another wheatfield!
This adds a lot of enjoyment to the game simply by taking away some of that daily grind.
If you can be patient during the holidays, obtain as many of the special resources (i.e. easter eggs) as you can. So you can buy otherwise expensive items like vet generals or floating residences.
After I balanced my silos and farms, I got a few watermills. They are not efficient from a gc point of view, but again they add some enjoyment to the game because you can get a constant level of water that's not dependent on the daily digging of wells so it takes the pressure off the building every time you log back in.
Also note it is much cheaper (per level of water produced) to upgrade a watermill to level 4 or even 5 than to buy a new watermill.
The key aspects of the game revolve around population. Scaling up that population is vital. The houses that you are able to build at the start of the game will quickly need to be replaced in favor of Star houses which don't use a building license like the base houses and noble houses.
If new to the game, study the home islands of high level players to see how they have organized their buildings.
Use the battle simulator. settlersonlinesimulator.com/dso_kampfsimulator/en/#sim-result
You will lose fewer troops and, over time, learn the strength and weaknesses of each type.
Use the adventure guides. They are not just a way to mindlessly go through an adventure. After you learn the techniques of advanced players, go your own way.
Plan buildings well in advance. Both the placement of the building and the chain required to run the building if applicable.
if your doing adventures & like blocking ,but blocking doesnt like you ! if guide says "Send generals right after each other:" try a steady count to 5 before you send each general instead (you could also listen to the general sounding,,but im usually listening to music & cant hear it) gl in game
When a deposit is depleted (ore, meat, wheat, fish) clicking on the banner that announces the depletion will take you to the depleted resource
Experiment. Make up your own blocks to see what works.
Run gold chains (mines/smelters/coinages) only while they are in buff mode.
Multiplayer adventures are almost always the best, because you can sell the other spots for a tag and for coins. This is a very good way of making money. I do not suggest Sons of the Veld or Secluded Experiments, though!
Put some buildings to sleep,(smelters, sawmills etc etc),building up other resources when in short supply or to stockpile
dont over build! biggest mistake is to destroy buildings and then need them in a few levels.
Here's a tip that some will never learn even after being told numerous times in Global ;). Be Courteous and you will likely receive benefits for the remainder of your time on The Settlers Online. Players reward kindness with kindness. If I ever run short of resources, I can count on someone I've helped before to return the favor. Thank you and Happy Settling :)
Make sure you focus on Bread production :)
Its ok to make mistakes :)
One of the most effective uses of gems is the purchase of savage scouts. Over time, they pay for themselves.
Do not waste gems on one time items. The more important gem items to focus on include Building Licenses, Vet General, and the Jolly Geologist.
Look for various guides for island clearing, adventuring, and other guides. Here are a few important ones.

If you can't restock your gold mine, stop it when it has 1 or 2 ore left. Recycle the mine and get 375 tools, 350 marble and 350 hardwood back. It helps to bring the bottom line down on the cost of the mine.
At a point where your have 3 or so regular generals and your explorers and geologists, destroy your tavern for the licence spot.It is worthless if you are done using it!
When attacking the Dark Castle or White castle use a veteran general and 250 recruits
When you are first starting to build your island try not to build to many Nobles as they use up building licences, instead, buy them from people or you will end up having to tear them all down and replace them.
Always use a friend to place an exotic basket!
Make Constant buffs ready for whenever they are needed. . . . And have your friends buff you for a bit of extra buff time
Always have a friend use your red flying settler on your building vs. buffing yourself. Just send it to him after explaining which building, i.e. level 5 coinage!
Tip: If you want to get Large Amounts of Granite and Only little Experience Points, Do the Adventure Island of the Pirates. If your Luck is High enough, you'll get Tons of Granite.
Tip: If you only need a less then 3,000 Experience Points, you can do a Experience Point run on the Adventure Traitors to get either 2,620 Experience Points or 5,060 Experience Points. http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/6...motraitors.jpg
Before Doing an Adventure, Check out a guide and have all the necessary troops along with a few extras just in case you come across a small mistaken attack
Always have a friend place your lucky rabbit foot on a building for you vs. doing it yourself. I.E. level 5 Gold smelter!
Dont try over working your self. Stay within your building limit an yout zone of work
For beginners: go through trade office a lot, so you can not only get a view of the current price, but also get a surprise super deal sometimes!
For level 24: Don't get a gold mine too soon. Usually players will not be able to afford a gold smelter or coinage before level 30. It doesn't worth the material and buff put in.
Keep a small notebook handy, for notes....dont forget a pencil! For example sent friend invite to twocents last night...check friends list to see if accepted :)
Or Two Cents bought my gold ore 3000 for 1150gc and will buy more!
Dont get banned in chat.......just ignore the trouble causer!
Save your high level items until you know the value......in trade chat ask for offers if you do not know the going price!
If you give someone a good price, friend them as well! Keep track of who is fair and respectable!
