Suggestion: Clickable Animals
Here's an idea:
Let us click on the deer and wolves (or are those panthers? boars?) walking around our islands. Clicking on the deer could send out an unused peasant to hunt them. This could take time (a few minutes), and only one deer could be hunted at a time. Once the peasant kills the deer, the player receives a small bonus of meat to add to the mayor's house (maybe 20 meat or so).
For the wolves, it would be similar, but clicking them would send an unassigned recruit (or bowman). As with the deer hunt, it would take a few minutes for the hunt, and the reward could be something small and random similar to treasure hunts. Or maybe you lose the recruit, but gain something that's worth slightly more than the cost of the recruit. Adding in a random chance to gain something special like a magic bean or a buff would really make it worth while, but not unbalanced.
The rewards for either of these don't have to be huge: nothing that would make an overwhelming advantage to a player who maximized the process, or a disadvantage for players who don't.
The bonus is that it's an easy way to give players something simple to do while they wait for other things to happen in the game. The bonus for TSO is that it captures that type of slightly obsessive player who likes to micromanage everything on their island (i.e., it keeps those players logged in and playing actively more).
Cheers,
