The new silos

I am going to make this simple. After tossing tons of gems and coins to buy enough to support my grain production, after paying even more coin, granite, exo planks to upgrade them... BB wonderfully comes up with the NEW silo...

I understand the company doesn't operate on coins but real money, I understand the gem sales are very much needed so we can actually play the game, I get it. You couldn't just make some "upgrades" toward existing silos to buy for gems? The old silos will be obsolete now and all the hard spend gems are down the hole. You can continue to make gem sales and not making me (and I am sure I am not the only one bitter about it) feeling just... used like a cash cow?

I am happy about the new silos... and same time I feel like a big sucker that you (BB) just flushed for gems. This could be done much better. But hey, I am just the sucker, I get it now.

How...how are the old silos obsolete exactly? They work just as well as before; you don't have to change your configuration unless you want to; it's an option if you want to conserve space down the road. Not to mention that they'll fill gaps left by the improved silo better than buying yet another improved silo. I've a nice, happy, balanced bread production and I feel no desire or need to rip up anything b/c of these things. If I find I need space...well, then I have an option, which is a good thing.

The only annoyance is the 255 gem differential between production modes -- a lobby effort to drop the original silo price to 700 wouldn't go amiss and would still favor the larger gem sale, though they do seem deaf to reason on that front

Look at it like buying a car... that was all sexy when you first bought it... but 3 years later the new model comes out with new hotness.

Your old car is still working fine, still gets you from point A to B... just not as well as the new model.

Would you really feel like a "sucker" over the fact that the world didn't stand still and your 1980 Pinto isn't still the pinnacle of modern engineering?;)

where is the "new silo" info? test?

I see what you’re trying to say there and there is some truth to it but I think that analogy is a little flawed.

A better analogy would be to buy windows 7 for $100 use it for a year then find out to get service pack 1 costs another $30 and in that service pack is an improved graphical interface or a smarter, faster and more secure ‘free’ anti-virus + firewall software. It’s not a new operating system (I.E Windows 8); it’s the same one just improved a little.

Cars and software are 2 very different things. If they released The Settlers Online 2 and had an improved Silo then yes the car analogy would fit much better. But with software, especially with a persistent online game it’s like everyone is buying/using the same car and a year later after you brought into it the manufacture decides to change what it is everyone is driving. Its not a new car your getting, it’s the same one! Those that have brought manual roll down windows in the past for $30 will need to spend another $20 to have new electric ones. Where by newer players or players that have yet to spend some gems will be able to swoop in and save themselves $30 and get a much better product to boot.

In a persistent online world it’s more like living in a massive house with 5000 other people. Then the owner of the house comes along and lets you buy things from them to get your personal bedroom just how you like it, a HDTV, computer, automatic lighting, water bed and anything else that takes your fancy. You spend $7000 to do it but you get it done. Then shortly afterwards the owner of the house comes along and gives the other residents of the house access to everything you own but new and improved for $2000. Not only making all your stuff redundant but costing you $9000 in total for you to have exactly what everyone else now does whereby they have just spent $2000. Wouldn’t you be a little miffed by that?

In fairness the game is 2-3 year's old its not like you just bought the newest model and the next day it became obsolete. Also the entire you spend 7000... and then someone new gets to spend 2000 is completely wrong, since the new silo is much more expensive. You paid 7000 for a working late model plasma, the new guy came along and paid 21000 for that Ultra HD etc etc.

I honestly can't get my head around why anyone wouldn't be thrilled with the new silo, since depending on licenses it will allow those that want to put in the effort to increase wheat production drastically. Space is so limited things like the Friary & ISH and now the new silo are great!

i'll hold out for the Improved Out House 3x as many settlers can go poo at once

I have fun reading those... All your logic is sound and solid. Wait till you get your hands on the new silo and realize 1 of them can service 3 farms and how much more room you can get on your island by getting those. 2k gems is not picnic it means from 1 gem pit you only can get 10 of those.

I would rather have some kind of upgrade to the old silos sold in gem shop for 1k gems than doing it this way. And yes your old silos are obsolete. Who is gonna buy them now? When you can get the brand new 3x better one?

It's not the idea, it is very welcome, we all need more space on our islands. It's just making stuff obsolete (that was costly to obtain and improve in the first place) with few lines of code is what makes me feel sad. And used.

Yea Pink don't get me wrong, some sort of trade in system where we could sell our old silos back to the store for say a 75% refund on gems to spend on new silos would really be TOPS on the customer service..... But I wouldn't hold my breath for that.

That said there will still be a huge market for old silos, people who before never bothered with them will possibly decide to buy them and new players will still buy. I expect that their price will stop increasing so drastically which my have the added benefit of putting truehead out of business, but things will be just fine for regular silos.

The market will work like this - Ballers (like myself) will demand the best equipment and in return start selling our old silos from tear down to 'newer' players at a discount to par. It will be a bad ratio for the person needing the latest greatest but they will have the islands to support the swap. The only risk to this version of events is if there aren't 'newer' players willing to 'sell' gems into the system.. at which point yes things will suck for the established players not wanting to spend gems.

I can't wait to get my hands on these. I think I'll need 3 per 8 farms, but I can figure the exact details out later.

With currently 8 silos per 8 farms, that's 16 slots, will only need 11 slots for same production with 3 of these 3x silos. Use the five slots for 3 farms, another 3x silo and a regular silo and you're up 3 level 5 farms inthe same footprint. Or you have 5 spots to use for other stuff...

Except they aren't 3x better. They cut the production time from 12 to 4 mins but now there is 3x the walk time. So it can't really handle 3 farms unless the farms are quite a bit further away. They need to make it 3 wheat per cycle (per lvl) and keep the production time the same. As it stands now you can't simply replace 3 silos with 1 new one if you want to keep things balanced. It's more like 1.1 new silos per farm.

But I have just brought the newest model! I just brought 20 currently existing silos which in my book makes them new for me. So that’s 750 x 20 = 15000 gems. They produce 1 grain every 12 minutes so that’s 20 grain every 12 minutes. If I was to buy the imp silos though at their current test server price of 1995 gems I could buy 7 of them with gems spare. They produce 1 grain every 4 minutes so if I spent the same amount of gems for the imp silo as I did for the original silo’s I would have 7 silos which produce grain every 4 minutes. Going by the 12 minute standard of the original silo then, the end result would mean in 12 minutes I would get 21 grain as there are 3 4’s in 12 so 3x7=21. Not to mention 1035 gems going spare!

So not only will my brand new silos be obsolete potentially within 1 development cycle of me buying them but the imp silos are cheaper and produce more than the original, not to mention save 3 times the space in the process!

I’m not saying I ain’t happy with them, they are a nice item. I’m just not happy about how BB have implemented them and just take my money the first time then bring out something exactly the same as what I just brought for less and that’s more efficient for a full price again. It should be an upgrade to the silo we have and it should be a lot cheaper then 1995 gems! This way time is not a factor. If I buy an original silo 2 years or 2 days ago it retains its value because everyone, old and new has to then additionally upgrade it again if they wish to, to the improved version. Whereas how they are currently doing it favors new players over the long term loyal ones. They won’t buy the old ones and can save space, gems and get better production all for not having played the game for long enough to have brought the original silos yet. This in my book makes it unfair. And don’t think I’m trying to say long term players should therefore be reward for their loyalty either. I’m after balance for both new players and old ones. I’m not after being rewarded for being a long time player what I want is not to be penalized for it!

I spent coin the first time to buy silos, i will spend coin the second time. Thanks to test server I know about this in advance and can plan for the impending large-sum expenditure. At least on Zeus, there is such high demand for silos, old time 50s will price newer players out of the gem market, and sell them out old silos (probably for double to triple what we originally paid for them).

I say progress here is positive. My biggest complaint is this is NOT a clean 3 for 1 swap. The walk time fiasco is a big pain that a fair number of players (some developers included) DON'T understand and irks every perfectionist who does.

Oh, and have fun spending 20-30k coin per Improved Silo. I could be wrong, I could be low balling it. Its a game, you would quit the game if things didn't go obsolete to freshen it up a bit.

I don't mind BB pushing sales, adding stuff and influencing us with goodies to buy gems. They need gem sales I get it. Just don't make me feel like a sucker by implementing things that way. I have been playing mmos for 14 years now I walked away from few games already that made me feel like this. I am sure I am not the only one feeling just being used. There is a better way to make peps happy and satisfied and keep the gem sales flowing.

I honestly think I am done spending money on this game. Once I hit 50 will just optimize my island, have some fun with friends and not care what shiny new goodies BB will introduce. If I got the coins to get them from TO - so be it. But, I will not give money to devs who make me feel like a cash cow to be milked. No thanks.

I haven't bought gems in about a year. I still have half of what I last bought. I am waiting for something worth spending them on.

Only thing I spend my gems on is the gem pits because then I get double the investment. Otherwise I get the gc I need. Also remember improved silos are 3x better, but you have to include walking distance and how much space they take up. I'll see how that goes on my island but I think I'm going be sticking to the original silos because an imp silo takes up more space then 1 silo.

You got that exactly right Truehead. I am at that point and have been for some time.

I've stopped spending gems until I know for sure whats going here, I just bought some normal silo's and have no intention of wasting more gems, maybe I should just wait until there are lots of cheap old ones for sale in the TO and save gems buying those? I’m not sure BB have thought about how many gems sales they will lose as the normal ones do the job and on an island like mine as I have plenty of space so don’t need to spend real cash, I'm sure the older ones should get cheaper in TO once the improved ones are for sale, or maybe no one will buy them? lol

I think there will still be a good market for the regular silo's. While I hope to pick up a couple of improved-silo's, I don't plan on getting rid of the old one's I have. A lot of players under level 45 have tons of space on their Island. They would benefit from selling an improved-silo for 10k and then buying 6 regular silo's with that coin? Sure you have buy three upgrade's/silo's per one/improved silo; but at the end of the day you have twice the production for you gem investment.

I wont be buying any new silo's unless they really are 3x faster, which they are not, and even then why would I bother if a bit further down the road an improved improved silo's is for sale? I just think it stinks making a building thats already for sale a bit better when there are other buildings they could have made, now if they offer an option to upgrade the normal silo for 1245 or buy a new one for 1995 then I may think about using them

As a new player, I have to say I'm excited. I'm hoping that your old model silos will once again become affordable as you rich folk dump them for space savers. These old silos should not be compared to cars and certainly not to operating systems. Older operating systems lose their value because they fall behind technologically and they are no longer supported. Even cars break down over time.
Your silo however, has nothing wrong with it. Its still the same old silo and quite valuable to those of us with room to spare. I think frozen manors vs nobles is a better comparison. I look for Manors first. But I definitely look for residences second. I'm not waiting for frozen manors to hit the market if Nobles are available at a reasonable price.

exactly its a space saver though a better deal price wise than frozen manors

my 50ish silos i have demoed were all lvl5- so i will be looking to get top dollhairs for the rest of them (only 10 left)- imo, the more i invest in something (whether it be real $, pixels and time) the more i am going to sell that item for and or value it. You wont find cheap silos here and i do not have a problem getting rid of them at my prices.

Lol, not now you don't. But even your prices are not immune to the market.

Given the supply of gems v. number of players who want silos....i think his prices are fairly safe. Costs 30k gems to outfit each player with 40 silos.
