Personally - I would classify trivia's and giveaways as 'Contests'. One of knowledge, the other of fortunate timing and quick clicking. I would NOW vote that such 'Contests' be done in Global-1. As stated earlier - changing to a different global channel isn't newbie friendly, and I would think they are the main target audience for the giveaways. Newbies would automatically see them in Global-1.

As for the BB reps and Mods not being on the same page for this stuff... c'mon BB - all it takes is one email from Susu to all Mods.

Trivia was never qualified as a give away :O It's an event. And it doesn't belong in trade chat. About those traders that their offers are lost in the chatter of trade chat they need to try harder. I always dealt with the chatter by posting twice or thrice the same offer later or every 1 or 2 minutes. If they are lazy enough to persist on their offers then they aren't cut off for trading...

I really think it should depend on the type of giveaway you are involved in. I don't mind Mike's giveaways at all. I think they are good for some of the newer players and it is generous of him to consistently give back to the server. I don't think activities like that should be discouraged. I remember enjoying similar giveaways from other players when I was first starting out. But I can understand how the constant chatter in trade becomes an issue for some. When I do giveaways I prefer to treat it just like a regular trade. I'll list bla bla for a fish and then when those are done i'll move on to the next item. If people say thank you during the giveaway I do not respond. Typically that leads to a lot less chatter.(Although I've been accused of being rude because of this) :) When I am down to the last item i'll make it clear the giveaway is ending and when people say thank you then i'll respond usually once and also thank them for participating. So there is still a slight distraction to trade but a little less so then in other cases.

I think that something like that is still a very appropriate use of trade and is a minimal distraction to the others who are trying to get their trading done. But when you start asking questions and then telling others to post for the winnings you are getting much closer to a trivia contest. And if that's going to be the case then it may be best moved to another global. I don't think that would be too difficult to accomplish. All you would have to do is to post once that are going to be doing a giveaway in global-2 with a quick explanation of how to get there. Then only those who are interested in participating can go and be involved. That really shouldn't be much of a hassle to the one doing the giveaway and wouldn't cause problems with those traders who don't enjoy such things. So basically I think we just need better defintions of what a giveaway is and where you cross the line into something leaning more towards trivia or a sort of giveaway game for prizes. To me a straight up giveaway should be perfectly acceptable in trade while the latter would probably be better served in one of the globals to keep all parties involved content.

Well said. We are feeding the fire for no reason. Let's just give it a test period with a few rules/guidelines set and let's discuss this again after a month or so and see how it goes. Don't go about enforcing immediately a plan/guidelines with no testing period. I think we should learn from the mistakes of the past.

A lot of interesting opinions were stated. I hope the mods take them into consideration.

As Methius stated, there is a difference between a giveaway and trivia. What is so different about posting "1k copper for 35c in To 4 lots" vs "1k copper for a fish 4 lots". Even if it creates a lot of ty's and yw's doesn't matter much. On the other hand trivia games or different forms of it don't belong in trade. No one wants to see a question posted and 30 people trying to answer it.

the problem i see with holding trivia in channel 2-30 is not that many people will see the announcement to go to that channel. i've walked into global 1 plenty of times to find there's an impromptu giveaway going on. a single announcement will scroll off fairly quickly. and then u have to explain to new players how to change channels. its just easier to hold it in g-1

I agree wish Bushy, I dont understand why it hurts so mutch and why it needs a big discussion.... Be happy people give stuff away for free end of story...

I normally keep posting every 10-15 mins before I have an event going on and send mail to friends. Tell people that are holding event to announce more frequently where and how they will be holding stuff. Works for me.

i think your event is great Scientist. on zeus, its more likely that people don't plan it out. they're just bored and decide to give some things away, and come up with trivia questions on the spot. can be 1 question, 5, or more. its quite spontaneous, and i'd hate to see that stifled over rules to change channels.

if it's a simple giveaway.. then post anywhere you want but don't be a jerk about it... (we already have rules against people being jerks so no need to explain what this entails)

if it's a trivia/game giveaway... then G-1

all these refinements of rules will just lead to further problems in the future.. When the words are many so are the Misunderstandings.. as long as the 'original purpose' of the rules is not being affected then no need to enforce them... if the 'original purpose' of the rules is being affected.. then enforce them while remembering their humanity (this means - giving them a warning)

the #1 reason I no longer chat or give away things as much as I used to... is because of these 'legalistic' rules that have far strayed from their 'intended' purpose and now are just marching orders for people who can't wait to abuse their new found powers.

Discretion should be the valued word... not Rules

I do all my give aways to my guildmates only.

I think Mike like me and other High players use Trade as a way to help everyone and it should stay in Trade.

I know socialism and government regulation is all the rage these days with yuppies but seriously, why does giving something away need to be regulated AT ALL? Just because something exists and it happens does not mean there needs to be rules and regulations on the 'proper' time and place to do it. Obviously BB has no qualms about having giveaways in global-1 because they give stuff away there. If you want to give something away in help or trade WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU FEEL THE NEED TO STOP IT OR REGULATE IT? You people who are trying to regulate giving stuff away are utterly pathetic.

Larger players helping smaller players is a critical piece of the game dynamics. EVERYONE has at one point been helped with someone's generosity. It is not only welcomed...but necessary to maintain social structure. In addition the turnaround of new players has a direct link to these "give-aways" and special events. Banning players for such activities is not only counter productive to the game, but to the franchise as a whole.

communism looks good on paper but it doesnt work. It is much more helpful teaching someone how to catch their own fish rather giving them a fish. Giveaways are nice but when it consists of a trivia type game where whoever answers the question first gets the prize clutters trade tab for everyone else who is trying to advertise goods. Even though it is nice of a player to give out free resources, it is quite selfish if you are taking over trade tab and not allowing people to post their trades....

If you are simply posting resources in TO for 1 fish and advertising it, that is one thing, but when you require the participants to answer questions is when it becomes TRIVIA, which does not belong in Trade Tab.

You really need some education on what communism is. Giving stuff away is not communism, the government claiming ownership of everything you own and redistributing it has been what governments who call themselves communist did do but that is not communism either. Communism is working together (without trade or currency) to meet the needs of all, something that no human government has ever managed to pull off. Furthermore your teach how to fish rather than give a fish line is beyond stupid in the context of this game because while addicting people to handouts in the real world can cause them to stop progressing (often by draconian requirements attached to said hand outs forcing them to not work, not get married, not get a job, etc if they want to keep getting benefits), in the context of this game handouts accelerates progress, it doesn't inhibit it.

Lastly and more to the point, the reason trivia is in trade is because of absurd interpretations of the 'rules' by out of control mods who have arbitrarily decided that trivia is not allowed in global-1 because its trade. If you were really paying attention to the new rule they are trying to set up you would see that the new rule while yes it would stop giveaways from being posted in global-1, help, and trade it would further be interrupted by the same out of control mods to make giveaways illegal altogether which would just happen to have the side effect of posting 1 fish for 1k coins illegal which would just happen to make selling ls in TO illegal. And you are supporting this rule simply because you are upset that someone dares to post something in trade that you dont like and you want rules and regulations to be imposed rather than simply muting the people who are annoying you.

Why don't you just select several global room such as global 5-7 and designate them as player trivia and giveaway room. I can say from experience that going through the BB channel asking for permission to use a global room for a giveaway and scheduling it on their calendar did absolutely nothing. Half hour before event was to start I got "suggested to" move to another room. Unimpressed by the "support" I got.

I've said it before in another post, but I'll give the abridged version here. Giveaways should not be done in trade tab. I've seen a few people do it there with little consequence. But, when you hve someone like M that comes in trade every day for an hour giveaways free baubles for people many of them level 50 players that don't even need the stuff to begin with in is an utter nuisance and causes all trade to shut down while he's there. I've seen other people do giveaways with little ill effects. However, M demands that everyone says thank you to him for every lot. He also verbally abuses and bullies others along the way inspiring his lackeys to do the same. There's also the unaddressed issue of him posting links to outside websites. Sending people there for some reason unknown to all but the offender. Possibilities include pay-per-click where he gets paid money for each individual that comes to the site or even viruses, malware, or bugs infiecting unsuspecting visitors. This player has ruined all giveaways for everyone and should not only be banned from trade tab but from TSO altogether. All other posts here that differ from this opinion are to ignorant to understand this or just chose to ignore it for 1000nibs, etc. Guilds are set up to provide assistance to lower level players. Go to your guild and ask for help. If they can't provide it then find a different guild. Learn how to play the game people. The developers have done an excellent job of being thorough in the game design and implementation. It is a scourge for offensive players to bend the rules and rewrite them for their own ulterior motives

I see 2 issues here, player giveaways and contests. As long as a giveaway is posted as a trade I do not see a problem with that.
Contests should be held in global 2-30. Advertizing a contest may be announced in all channels as long as they do not result in chat spam.

2: people engaging people in their trades, even if they are giveaways, does not stop you from peddling your wares in trade. It just makes people less interested in your trades if the other trades being offered are more interesting, welcome to capitalism 101.
3: you can mute people you do not want to hear from and no one is forced to say anything to these people unless they want to participate
4: your other issues listed are completely unrelated to the issue at hand and you are free to write a ticket about them.

To address your points Milo, in order:

1: To a large extent it is. Particularly if you're trying to move things quickly For example, selling a lootspot before your premium time runs out, etc. You can't just post a fish for 10k coins and hope someone buys it without being able to advertise effectively in the Trade tab.
2. Someone giving away insignificant amounts of basic mats and resources in no way competes with my 10k coin lootspot. That has nothing to do with capitalism.
3. As I've said before, even if I mute (ignore) them, they are still monopolizing the tab and space.
4. No reason to write a ticket, there are plenty of global channels. All of our interests can coexist harmoniously if we just have a bit of common courtesy for the other guy ;-)
5. As this server develops and actions and/or ideas develop, new rules will need to be put in place to keep things fun for everyone.

I really don't see how asking someone who's going to monopolize the trade tab for 20-30 mins to do it in global whatever is coercing anyone to do anything.......except have a bit of courtesy for other players.

I'm surprised a Mod or BB have yet to post in here.

You have mentioned LS many times in your reply. The rule being proposed would make LS illegal when the zealous mods interpret the rule to encompass all 1 fish trades. As someone who sells LS you should know that BB support already does not respond to any LS related issues and when the mods do ban selling ls as part of this rule you will have no one in support to help you. If someone wants to give something away, trade or help is the right place to do it. If other people interacting in trade makes it harder or slower for you to move your goods, that should not be a cause for trying to get people banned. Your time constraints are not other people's and there shouldnt be rules to force people to do things the way that best serves you. You probably havent even considered that giveaways like this draw people to trade who otherwise would never even look at it and actually brings you more people to trade with. If trade is truly scrolling so fast that no one can see a ls you post then they wouldnt be able to see anything anyone is posting so how would the giveaway even work? If people are just responding slower then it doesnt matter where the event is held when you post the ls because if it was in global 1 or 2 then everyone participating would be over there and not looking at trade.

Dude, you really need to take a break from your computer. Im all about giving away free things to people but making a contest out of it and cluttering trade tab is selfish. There are other players in this game who would like to sell things and or buy things by advertising in Trade Tab and if a contest is held in trade tab there advertisement will easily be lost in clutter. We all just just voted on where contests should be held, i did not see anywhere on the answer selections that giveaways should be done with, rather moved to a different tab. it looks like you are brand new to this game so im sure you love the fact that you can get free resources but your not thinking about all the other players who also use trade tab to actual post trades. Why do you think player held auctions are held in g2-30? why do you think the scientist hold his trivia in g2-30? because they are nice enough to not take over trade tab and disable other players from being able to post trades without it being lost in trivia clutter. luckily we rarely have this problem in Zeus because most of the players who are in trade tab actually use it to trade things......

This rule being proposed right now would make selling LS illegal because LS are 1 fish trades. In BB land LS do not exist, the only thing that does exist to them is a trade of something for a fish. If you have ever tried to contact support about an LS issue you would know that for them LS are not a thing. If they are not a thing then suddenly the trade is only a 'giveaway'. The giveaways are in trade because the mods have banned them everywhere else already.

WHere in this thread does it say anything about making lootspots illegal?

If you make giveaways illegal then you ban LS too because BB's consider LS trades giveaways already. For them LS are not a thing and any trade connected to a LS is a giveaway. Contact support about an LS issue and this is exactly what they will tell you. A ban on giveaways is a ban on selling LS. They are one and the same to BB.

giveaways? hmmmm so a giveaway is something that is FREE, right? so if you are selling one fish for something, that wouldnt be a giveaway though, right?

everything in this game has some sort of value, even 1 fish. the only thing that is FREE is if someone gifts you a gem item or gives you a free ls. if you are offering resources for 1 fish that technically is not FREE..

You are paying someone for Time and Troops as well as Loot Rewards so that way they only have to tag and still get loot.

This thread has been deviating from the original issues and the question posed. To rephrase the original issue, the concern is that people are using the trade tab in ways that have been causing complaint from others in the channel. This has required us to look at some of the different types of related activities that are occurring. Generally, these can be classified as follows.

1. Giveaways. These are times when people are posting trade offers for resources with a trivial cost. There is no requirement for taking the trade, and the trade is posted by the person with the resources.
   
2. Contests. These are times when people start an activity where someone is selected based on the activity. As a result, that specific person is traded resources (or given a prize), either directly between players or an offer posted in the trade office by the person receiving the resources. These may be spontaneous and of short duration, or may be a planned event and of a longer duration.

The question of loot spots was not intended to be included in the discussion, and it would not be wise to try to include it at this point. Please remember that this discussion is intended to allow the players to express their opinions and share their viewpoints, not as a binding vote. Also please remember that normal forum rules do apply and posts should address the topic and issues, rather than opinions of other players.
