I cleared my island with 2 reg generals. it is a challenge but it can be done.
Take your time and watch battle replays, they will tell you what is effective in attacking camps.

Were they using R, B and C only? or all advanced units? :) Because yah know.. when you are clearing your island you don't have access to anythng else but those 3 units... :P
You have access to those as you clear. You might also get some help from your Guild if you have joined one. :)
It is more than possible I played on my own without using cash until I was well over level 30. When I first started to play they didn't even have as many great buffs as they have now.
I could be mistaken, but I got the impression the OP was talking about clearing your island using the new combat system on the test server. All the replies of 'sure its a breeze, did it with my eyes closed' seem to be talking about a long time ago and far far away from the reality of today's test server.
I could be wrong though.
i'm working on it now, on test server. once you reach lvl 27, you get soldiers. it takes sol. to kill the harder enemies in sec 9.
it only took a few days to level to that point, and i'm half way thru killing the enemy camps.
on test tho, you start out with a lot of resources, even if you don't accept the mail. so its impossible to tell how difficult it would be
for new players to get the high number of soldiers needed to clear their island.
on ares, im level 25, still waiting for soldiers. after playing so long on zeus it seems impossibly slow now, even with help from a guild.
In summary, you can do it. Keep going.
So, basically it is possible with soldiers. And how long will it take to build the workshops, make those SS and train those units needed? Just curious. Days or weeks? Realistically?
