Yep. This exactly. THIS particular element of the game should not be left up to "luck" deciding, whatever algorithm may pass for "luck" here.

I don't think it is unreasonable that the recipe is somewhat luck based, but there should be a cap. Not getting it after the first try is reasonable. Not getting it after 50 tries is not.
You say 50, and BB might set the limit to 49 :D
When talking on forums, we need to be careful what we wish for, because we might get it..
I'd say the recipe should be no more than 10 attempts.. (especially if someone can get it on their first attempt)..
Period.. No ifs not buts, 10 is max reasonable limit in my opinion..
Still trying
In the endeavour to get the recipe - not only can we not produce a manuscript other than in the bookbinder leaving us trailing in the skilled generals, but the lost compass demands to make a codex also to complete - a hefty payment for 50 diamonds and adds insult to injury in trying to get the tech trees done.
In addition, while all others are using their crystals to obtain and complete evil queen adventures and clocking up some nice experience and improving epic farmyard - our crystals are being thrown back in letters - I am at a loss to understand why BB would put so costly a feature up on a lotto basis
CHANGE LOG
The Manuscript, Tome and Codex recipe will be guaranteed after a certain amount of tries.
YAY
And whatever the number that BB comes up with, some will complain about that -I guarantee it.
Probably 49 thanks to Alice's suggestion. With general skills, this is a much needed enhancement.
Of course..
Like the new limit is 49 retires.. but what about 100 before the feature gets applied to the game?
for "me" it is still 149 attempts, before "I" get it.. No fair :(
(That too assuming it is indeed 49.. Will find out over the next year :|)
- So I say, on behalf of others :D
It says past tries are counted towards the total, so if it is 49 and you have already done more than that, you will get it first try.
Great news - light at the end of the tunnel :)
Opened another box this morning .....50 gems yay!!

I'm still doing letters even though I got the recipe. I do enough to do one Evil Queen venture a week for the sake of completion and having a fully upgraded epic farmyard that I don't even really need, but they aren't worth the effort. Not that it helps anyone who is still waiting for manuscripts, but I think the long letters are the best use of crystals.
Agreed. I keep FY in star and when I do waste some time on that chain, I just pull it out of star while my gens are on an adventure and ug it and put it back. No room for it and until it is maxed out, not even worth thinking about altering the rest of my island's production.
Anyone getting an idea about what the magic number is? I still don't have the crystals to do a long letter again, but am wondering if I am close to getting the recipe
did tries 11 and 12 for the manuscript recipe yesterday.... 50 gems each time... sucks to be me.... lol
Of those people who have been trying to obtain the manuscript for a long time, have any done so since roll-out of cap?
I opened a box after roll-out and got 50 gems - thought okay, I need to actually complete the full quest line. I did so and guess what ...another 50 gems.
Submitted a ticket suggesting a bug or else to advise me what the cap is. I received a response saying they couldn't tell me the cap but to complete the letters one more time to activate the roll-out. I have completed it twice since, and took screenshots in case I am asked for proof. I am only sorry I didn't keep count of the amount of times I have done letters but I am so frustrated and despondent at this stage I am seriously thinking of quitting now.
Has anyone else received the manuscript since roll-out?
try 13... still no manuscript recipe.... sigh....and yes I have heard a few have gotten it Krysis
I have done 2 more with 2 in the process since they made a cap. I am really not even going to try any more. I am just logging in and doing a few things and going off somewhere else. I can't even get interested in playing right now. Maybe after a break, I'll get back into it.
i had about 40 tries before upgrade for manuscript recipe, no joy...
then after upgrade i have done 5 quets already and still no result....
each time i get 50 gems....it is very annoying, since the upgrade is suppost to take previous tries into account.
over 40 tries means less then 2.5% chance to get that recipe....it is a crock...
The frustration caused by not getting the manuscript recipe is causing a friend to look at other games. Six of us have gamed together for 5 or 6 years. If the game loses him, it loses all of us - and most are gem buying players all over level 60.
Strange that the developers did not see this coming..............
Hi all,
Thank you for continuing to update this thread. Our team has investigated several reports we received since the update, and none of them have indicated an internal game error so far. All verified accounts that had not yet received the blueprint were simply a matter of:
- No additional attempts since the update, or
- Not enough attempts overall.
We will keep monitoring the situation. Thanks again,
BB_Aeyline
Try 14..... 50 gems.... nice to be only one of two players in my guild that has had to run it over 10 times.... the part that suxs is seeing them chat back and forth about adding these books and adding those books to their generals... mean while I'm stuck with the bookbinder plugging along still working to get a few basic books on each of my generals so I don't look and feel like a IDIOT!!!!........... and now I wait til I have enough crystals to try again.... hmmm that will be next week sometime.... so now I'm even further behind on getting things skilled... Great JOB on fixing the recipe issue.... Venting Done for this week anyway....
Mad in the USA
Sherm......
Sorry, but 40 tries before update and 5 since is not enough? What astronominical figure do you have in mind. For those (and I personally know one with the 40/5 tries) who have tried this time are getting really discouraged. Is it fair for some to get it on the first try and some try 45 times and still not get it? THat is a tremendous amount of time to invest to not get something others got on first try!
hi BB_Aeyline,
could you check my attempts please, was wondering how many i actually did...think 40-ish before upgrade and 5 after upgrade.
wonder how many is should do to get that manuscript recipe
let me know what you find
thanks,
snowy
oh, btw, just finished another compass quest and guess what....50 gems again...that was attempt 6 after upgrade.....unlucky...maybe....annoyed...for sure
This thread his hilarious!
Try 15.... managed to get Book of Characters before I ran out of crystals (2 left)....and what did I get!...... 50 Gems.......btw was try 6 after the guaranteed drop was put into effect.... and now I SIT..... : (
Schadenfreude?
amazing....attempt 7 after upgrade....50 gems as usual....wonder what that promise was about ....recipe was a sure thing after upgrade.....doubtfull....the droprate seems not increased but decreased.
Attention BB's - How many attempts are you going to let our guild member snowywhite complete before honouring him with the Manuscript recipe? Surely this number of times is unusual.
Meantime, he sits and looks at other games he could play where he won't fall behind his friends. He goes, I go....................................

Soon i'm going to try 4th time. Quest is the lost compass, where i need to produce 1 codex and what i can excepte after i produce in bookbinder 15 manuscripts and 3 tomes and 1 codex in the mistery box, 50 gems.? If i get 50 gems again after all that just to get blueprint for manuscripts (oh the irony) i wish to whom ever made this "pop add 100% manuscript blueprint" after "certain number of tries (was this lawyer who made those words)" all the best in life (sarcasam). I mean, you are trolling with the last compass quest and you are going to make people rage quit this game.
Two things:
Best luck to you in future runs.
- Four attempts is VERY low in this department; no reason to be discouraged so early. If you followed this thread we have had many in the 20+ range and a few in the 50+ range. You are well withing the distribution range of 50% drop even for failing in 4 tries. Be patient.
- Keep accurate count. So many peeps so far are guessing and approximating their tries, some due to frustration, granted, but it would be nice to see if we (as a collective TSO player pool) can determine what that magic number is.
Hmm wonder how some of these players would react to being stuck at lev 50 for two + years with basically no place to go nothing to gain like many players were.
With all the whining, counting, and threats in the thread, there is one question that I do not believe was asked that may shed more light on the issue. While it was said there would be a maximum number of attempts to obtain the blueprint, it was not said if it counted all of the quests that could potentially give the recipe in total or if they were counting each individually. From the numbers posted, it seems likely people are counting all of the quests as a group. However, if they are counting each one individually (or were prior to whatever change they made in the most recent maintenance), it is likely that people would not be reaching the cut-off number for automatically getting the recipe.
Speaking of whining... *passes the Cottonelle*
What? That is an absurd assumption. In my experience with players in and out of the guild (and in other servers) most players focus on one (1) quest type at a time. Spreading your crystal gambling like that would be ridiculous and not likely by the majority of the players. It would take a lot longer to get anywhere if one was to follow such a strategy. That being said, I would submit that when players make claims in this thread, that in general, they are discussing one particular blueprint, and each blueprint has only one path via The Excelsior (Books, Travel Guides and Letters).
The bigger question is, "Is anyone actually keeping track, methodically?" It would be nice to know what that magic number is, should anyone actually hit it. That would include all the previous players above who had issues, respond in this thread with what number try (and what blueprint) they obtained it on. Of course, only players who actually were disciplined enough to keep track should reply in order to maintain some sort of integrity.
It seems that you may have the number of tries required before a given blueprint drops?! Really? If so, it would be very kind of you to share with the community that they may know. Also curious how you would have any inside information on the given players and their playing and spending habits to know how many tries that they have done or do on a daily basis.
While I agree that it should be considered one pathway, there is a divergence in the pathway that continues to be ignored. I am addressing the manuscript pathways here, which does seem to be the one of concern (and the name of the thread). While there is a common pathway until the crystals are consumed to provide manuscript fragments, there are three different quest lines that provide the reward box (Compass, Threat, Characters). The location of the placement of the counter will make a difference, particularly on the side of the re-convergence.
If the counter is simply counting the number of reward boxes opened, then it should function as expected from the player posts. However, unless the total count is set very (unreasonably) high, it is unlikely that some have not reached the upper limit. However, if the check is performed when the box is awarded to the player, with the content set at the time of award, then it depends if the counter is registering all of the three quest lines or only the individual quest line that was completed.
As for the question of methodical tracking, from the posts made here, it seems unlikely there is much information. People who tend to be methodical would likely be posting their information to include the different quest attempts, if for no other reason to see if it is more likely with one quest line against another at the same time.
If each individual quest (Compass, Threat, Characters) has it's own counter, then it's no wonder people are still frustrated in their efforts. If all three are counted as one entity for the sake of awarding the blueprint, then something is definitely not working as intended.
An explanation of the mechanics involved would go a long way here. There are times when it's "fun" for us to figure out how an aspect of the game works. This isn't one of them.
