Will the anniversary event be loaded on the 21st as well?
The only way to get the new lands is going to cost just under 14000 gems?????? Roughly $75.00?????????? Not exactly going to be achievable by a lot of people!
Gems can be earned via Excelsior as well as the weekly 100 gems just for logging in daily plus 100 a week that can be purchased with star coins. There are also gems paid out at various level ups. If someone is dead set against spending any money to support the game they can still get the islands eventually if they work at it. Spending money simply makes it happen faster.
If nobody ever bought gems, there would be no game for us to play, simple as that. It gets tiring to see all the complaining anytime BB does anything that costs gems/costs money/raises revenues so they can stay in business and keep the game going. Nobody owes anybody free entertainment and once this game starts losing them money it's going to close down, simple as that. If BB is pushing a little harder to get us to spend money maybe we should pay attention, huh? When gems come on sale you can get 24,000 for $49.99 so have no idea in what universe 14,000 gems is going to cost anybody $75.00.
Now that I've gotten that off my chest....... looking forward to having some new islands to build on. Didn't think it was going to happen this fast so cool!!
Thanks for the updates but just not going to do it. Havent bought all the islands that require deeds and def not going to buy four more.
Interesting gem bite, though interesting since no 3x sale been seen in many years and gem pits are still capped at 10x/lifetime, how many will jump right on. Perwyn is right, however, there are ways of making it happen, even on no gem purchase, if you have a plan and are patient.
I'll let myself be surprised by the islands/size/space, chances are I'll pass up on the huge disappointment seeing how the Archipleago turned out. 2+ years later and I still internally rage seeing the wasted space left and right haha
[QUOTE=Perwyn;286873]Gems can be earned via Excelsior]
I can't find this one, where can you get gems from Excelsior? I don't think many people are earning star coins anymore, unless they are concentrating on spending all their crystals on books. So at the 100 gems a week that is available to every one, that is only a bit more than 2 1/2 years! Oh, now I'm so excited!
I wasn't saying it wasn't doable, I was saying that I wish there was an alternative way to get at least one of the new islands like the archipelago by a method other than gems.
quote from dev diary
"or that, a minimum level of 50 is required. The unlock order by sector number is the following: 10, 11, 12, 22, 13, 23, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21."
But the sectors go up to 23??
ciara
I haven't even bought all the existing gem spend sector unlocks, and not planning on doing them atm, a lot of other things would come first. An alternate unlock method would have made this interesting or maybe even exciting. as it is it will be just a patch of open pasture on my map
wouldve been better if the smaller islands (north) costed sector deeds, and the big ones in south were for gems, 14k gems for some bits of land seems wasteful
I know that's what you're saying. And I'm saying everything in the game doesn't have to be and even should not be "free". If nobody buys gems, at some point the game is no longer viable for BB to maintain, let alone develop new content, because they're losing money on it, so then it closes down and we all lose out.
I'm on a limited income, but I can make the choice to stay home and eat PB&J or Top Ramen a few times instead of going out for Mexican or pizza or McDonalds or whatever and bingo, there's some cash saved up for for gems next time they come on sale. It's not hard to support the game if a person chooses to do so instead of expecting everything to be free, and complaining whenever it's not. It gets old. That's what I'm saying.
I spent probably that many gems on demolishing mountains. Still haven't used the space that freed up. I'm not sure there's anything compelling enough to bother with the new islands, but it's nice to have the option.
I think 5 or 10 dollars per month is very cheap for the amount of entertainment, and that would buy everything in the game relatively quickly. I've spent a few hundreds in the past, but not much lately because there was nothing worth the money. I really want this game to live on, and BB to make tons of money, but also they could be a bit more creative, like offering bundles which would include exclusive items, buildings or characters. This said, it is not easy to keep the balance between free and paying players, and to make it fair to everyone. This game needs as much players as possible to be enjoyable. I think the general idea of "play more" vs "pay more" is viable, and I guess they have some algorithm working on it.
Gems can be earned from ventures obtained via Excelsior. You need to use gems to make "letters." The easiest level of letters needs you to get 3 letter snippets, and then you can make one of four letters: An Elaborate Cat Collar, A Strange Idol, A really Sharp Claw, or A Poster for "The Annoholics" Tour. When completed, each of these ventures awards very small amounts of XP and also 50 gems. I know, 50 gems is not a lot of gems but they can amount to something substantial over time. Since the inception of the Excelsior, I have gotten enough gems to purchase ALL of the explosives to demolish mountains and rock piles. Plus, over the soccer event I purchased two 7-day premium times. Now, I have saved 1700 gems since the soccer event (what is that like 6 weeks?) to save toward buying the new island deeds. Yes, it is slow going. BB really is a business, so I am happy they have provided us a way to do it for free. Slow and steady wins the race, but if you are impatient feel free to get out the Visa card.
I am not a US Citizen. $75 in gems translates to over R1100 (Groceries for about a week even at $49 as Perwyn suggests).
To work on login bonus and 50 Gems a time Ecxelsior quests is ridiculous (Wonder if Perwyn did all his gem buys that way).
Keep your extra islands it will only make onscreen visibility worse, rather do something innovating with events replacing the rather boring "all work the same way" stuff.
People will pay for an exciting game, which with things as it stands - Settlers is not.
Question: I the game actually growing? I see old faces leave, but very few new faces arrive...
Even when I was prepared to pay there was basically no payment option available to me and others I have spoken to.
OK, point taken.
Altho in all fairness, I'm just as free to express my opinion as the next person. Taken in context, my original comment points out that I support BB making the decision to have the new islands cost gems and also points out that it's entirely possible to attain them without spending any money, which Bi0hazzard cheerfully illustrates later on in the thread.
So which came first? The complaining? Or the complaining? (Or the complaining?)
The game is free to play. There are (as far as I have found in the last five-plus years) no aspects of the game that *require* you to pay for anything.
Certainly there are things that work faster if you are willing to buy Gems, but Gems are freely available simply from logging on or using (among other things), the Excelsior system.
I've earned Gems, and I've purchased Gems. The former because I can, and the latter because I want the game to survive so I can keep playing it.
I accept that there are things that will only be purchasable with Gems, and that some people will be unhappy that the game doesn't hand them everything. As someone who has worked in a games design capacity, I understand what the BB folks go through trying to balance out the mess to engage as many people as possible. Sometimes they get it right...and other times they end up with the Colony/PvP system. :-/
TSO is a game that offers the complete game without cost. It also offers the ability to speed up advancements by spending money. Where exactly that line actually falls vs where it should fall will always be disputed by players.
Instead of opening the entire Archipelago at the same time, I would have liked to see getting access to a new Island/Sector at each new level after L50, but the folks at BB went down a different road and here we are today. Going forward, it would be nice to see at least half the new Islands/Sectors purchasable with something other than Gems (Stalks/or maybe a new resource in the RPH that uses high-end resources like Platinum). That way the people who have plenty of money can spend it as they see fit, but the rest of us could still eventually earn the Deeds through other means.
BB could even make 'normal' Islands/Sectors (typical space, average deposits, etc) available through the 'either/or' system, but reserve the 'better/premium' Islands/Sectors (more space, larger deposits, more water space, unlock new Quests/Ventures or Excelsior/Pathfinder options) for Gems only.
aw ty - i didn't see that out of order # :)

When does the maintenance take place? It just says the 22nd but no specific start time as far as I noticed. Is there no downtime for this update?
It would seem reasonable if the 4 Islands are going to cost Gems, why not increase the amount of corresponding Gem Pits that are available? An increase of 1 Gem Pit makes sense to me to achieve the same balance we had before. Thoughts?
Be advised currently the deposits on the new islands are not deposits but spawn locations! That means if you find a new one there you wont find a old one on current islands! This is under investigation by BB as to which they are supposed to be..
In my opinion this makes buying the new islands with spawn locations advertised as additional deposits a disadvantage.
So Im conquering the archipelago atm. Sent out explorers to clear clouds from new sectors. Suddenly POOF! the sector im attacking is again covered in clouds! What kind of sorcery is this?!
The explorers cleared the clouds again. Do i dare try once more?
Ran the explorer far away sector 6 times... it says its found 2 more ... but it never 'finds' the bottom ones ???
And the # in your "find them in this order" statement are useless without a sector map.

What is the point of having deposits on two of the new islands if you didn't raise the limit of granite, ti, and salt mines allowed??? They cannot be found!
This. I purposefully purchased the Sec 20 island for the granite and saltpeter deposits. If I had known that this was how this was going to work, I would have purchased one of the large islands to the south. The way that the Sneak Peek and the Dev Diary were written, there was nothing indicated that these deposits would only be new locations. It reads as if these would be brand new, additional deposits. 3495 gems is a lot for 14 spaces and new "locations" for deposits.
oh man....... well, if it wasn't buggy it wouldn't be BB, would it? Hopefully not raising the limit is an oversight, the "extra" deposits really are extra ones and they fix this soon. In the meantime I'll enjoy the extra pop from the mag res I was able to place on each island and keep my fingers crossed on the deposits part.
Also; as of update MR purchases are disappearing. I bought 4. Built 2 -- one built - the other disappeared. Refreshed - 1 in star. Ok built that.... bought 2 more (brings to 4).... one appears in star... 2nd one has not appeared. I'm informed its a 'known issue' but not when i will be sent my missing MR or beans to re-buy it. I mostly bought the isles to make pop... and now i'm stuck...

The new granite depo is really a pain! what should we do? Move the granite masons every time it is found on that isolate island? Don't know who thought of this but it really mess things up.
For titanium and salt it's not the same, you don't have this problem, but for granite is really bad. We can't move masons every time for the 7th one. Make it +1 or please remove it!
Glad i waited to see this thread first, looks like clouds will be south of my island for a very long time.
south island have more room while north islands have deposits to compensate the smaller constructable land
well, the total deposit limit has to be raised, otherwise this is pointless. if i can buy only 2 of the 4 islands, theres no point on buying the north ones
Looks like plenty of room for future gem deeds along the southern coast. I think I'll pass until there is a compelling reason. Don't currently need the space or population or deposits.
I like the new islands, especially 2 desert island. Perfect for rewards building from ali adv, cause they finally belong somewhere. Now I need to get some more of these to make it look really good.
I agree that gem price is little steep for that piece of real estate with no deposits at all (reflect real world even more now hahaha). Some people may find it more challenging to get them, so we have to get more creative as there are ways to get gem rewards without buying them. Isn't it what's this game should be all about? Try to figure out how to make things work without having served everything on a silver platter :)
