Same thing today, logged in 2 hours ago, 15+ tries - no luck. Not going to be much of an event
I had no problems today after the update getting in about an hour ago.
Just tried again now and it actually worked faster than normal.

Wondered where you've been. I got the same message today. "Client could not be updated." You were showing logged in when I was playing but you didn't answer in guild chat.

Hi bb , not sure what happened, cant login now with this new update, i have updated, yet it says no, not sure how to fix or if i can get back on i had no problem with first update, and did the xmas event. Hope to get this fixed an get playing again or i guess 10 years is long enough an time to quit sad times

im surprised that not many other people are posting here that they are having issues. either they are in game playing and we few with issues are screwed... or there just arent that many players who care...

are you guys logging in through facebook or through ubisoft? did you migrate your facebook accounts?
I've logged in every day since we moved to the client - just since the update last night I started getting the 'Your client could not be updated!' pop-up about 15 seconds after the first client window opens. There is nothing I can do from there but click on OK which terminates the whole process.
I play on a desk-top with Windows 10 64 bit system - have never used any facebook or other way to log in other than from my chrome browser.
Didn't have to migrate. This is the login I have always used even before it was the "Ubisoft login". I don't remember when i signed up for it but I am pretty sure I had the Uplay account already when i signed up for the settlers. So it just converted automatically.
I had this problem when we moved to the client and fixed it by adding the missing file. There shouldnt be a reason for me to be getting the same message now, but I am. I put in a ticket.
We have adapted, updated and corrected the additional file (SWF) in our instructions.
The guide now contains the new file and therefore a fix to the error "Your client could not be updated".
To play with the latest game version, you will need to download this SWF-file and add it to the noted folders.

I tried to start the game - same error message "Your client could not be updated!"
I logged out, cleared browser cache and tried again, - same message.
No fix for me so far.
I don't use any extra anti-virus program - just windows defender and windows firewall.

didnt seem to work for me either, I sent screenshot in with my ticket
didn't work for me first time either. renamed file to client.swf instead of the long alphanumeric and it looks like it worked

Changed the name of the file to client.swf.

Same as others on here not able to launch the game. Downloaded and renamed the file so that only client.exe and client.swf are in the appropriate folder. Still no joy. When is this going to be fixed?
-- I had to rename the following
C:\Users\<userid>\AppData\Local\The Settlers Online.old
C:\Users\<userid>\AppData\Local\Ubisoft Game Launcher.old
C:\Users\<userid>\AppData\Local\ubisoft.old
Then run the installer again. This removed the previous install and installed the new client. Then the game launched. :(
Game doesn't load for me even after completing all the troubleshooting steps. This is becoming very annoying
I uninstalled the whole game and started from scratch = still the same error message. It's getting really annoying.
Here's an idea BB - instead of trying to get your players try and fix your screw up put out a simple patch for those affected.
i think after 8 half years this is the final straw. Game was working ok and you screwed it up. Fix it!

You have to do:
- Rename the large file (9.234 kb) in the client folder with the alpha numeric code in "client" NOT client.swf. Leave out the .swf
I found this on the German Forum = This is the 2nd time I found the solution there. Hope this helps.
