The summer event for soccer is already in place and works great ... push for that and you might get it every year ... dream of purple unicorns and you will get everyone off track ...
The exp grind is driving away so many players - you will see so many inactives from lvl 44-55 range - look at Dave above currently lvl 68 and growing bored

Soccer would be great there is a soccer tournament every year (there are what 10 continental and international tournaments played yearly to every 4 years).
