    Clive's Cartography Challenge!

"You're looking to travel through the mountains? Well, that's a mighty treacherous road, friend. There's a pass that goes straight through them mountains, but it's difficult to spot unless you're right up on it. Let's see ... first, you want to follow this river until it forks. Follow the left fork until you spot a valley - not just any valley, you see, but one with bright purple wildflowers - not to be confused with the valley of slightly-less purple wildflowers. I'd say they were more mauve, anyhow. Cross that valley until you get to a bandit town. No, I don't know which one, but be careful to visit the bandit leader on the right and not on the left. The one on the right will avert his eyes on your passing for a shiny bribe; the other shoots all trespassers on sight. Finally, you'll want to turn left when you get to the kidney-shaped lake. It doesn't really look like a kidney unless you're standing on top of the mountain, and it kind of resembles the slightly-oval shaped lake. Walk for three miles and the pass will be straight ahead. Here, I wrote it all down on this napkin, along with this generic map of lakes, mountains and bandit camps. Boy, if only all these land features had names, that would make giving you directions a whole lot easier! Anyhoo, good luck!"
Clive sure does have a point, now doesn't he? It would be a whole lot easier to give travelers directions if these land features had names. For example, we could just call the kidney-shaped lake "Kidney Lake" and that valley with all the pretty purple flowers "Violet Valley." Say - didn't you mention you took a beginner's cartography course? Why then - you could name all these features!

    RULES
    • Take a screenshot of your Settlers map and name all of the features - mountains, lakes, oceans, towns, bandit camps, valleys, etc. See example below.
    • Post the screenshot in this thread. The screenshot must include names of at least (5) five land features. The screenshot can be of any section of your map or the entire map.
    • Accompanying story is optional, though encouraged. Is there a reason you named that lake "Treasure-at-the-Bottom Lake"? Why are those mountains called "Lightning Goat Mountains"?
    • Big thanks to johnthenewf for inspiration for the idea!
    • Picture resolution: At least 1024 x 768 pixels (or higher resolution)
    • The forum software scales pictures down. Please use a free picture service to upload your photo.

There once was a foreign family who had heard the name of a great king "Bushybraw". They packed up and decided to travel to his great land in hopes of taking up residence. Their boat approached from the southeast and as they passed by "Fishermans Cove" heading toward "Intercept Beach" they spotted the few of the Frozen Manors and though to themselves maybe one day they could live in one. As they got closer to "Copperhead Mines" the glow from the endless mines was so bright they couldn't help but pull the boat in closer for the amazing view.
Their journey continued and after what seem to be forever they arrived at "Intercept Beach" to be greeted by one of the kings greatest Major Generals Brutalious. Looking at the scars on his face they could tell he had been in many great battles but his voice was pleasing and he seemed very accommodating. Once the paperwork was done and some fees were paid they got directions to the Mayors house. They walked through the vast fields taking in the fresh smell of wheat as countless farmers worked while singing a happy tune.
When they got to the Mayors house they were told the mayor was out of town and would not be back for a few days. Something about a smelting accident in "Bronzeage" somewhere in Moneytown. Since there was no Tavern on the island they decided to explore the land. They were told to head north than east and circle back down south than west to get the best views of the land. They did as they were told and travled north coming upon "Lonley Mountain". They saw a miner hard at work and asked why the mountain was named as such. The miner explained that the intention was to name it "Lonely Mountain" however the Schools of Smartland had not been built yet and the people weren't as educated back than. The minor also told them if they were exploring to go east from there and take a look at the "Golem Island" where once a huge monster stood terrorizing the land. They decided they would rather skip the island and keep heading north. They went through Woodworth passing by "Sterile Mountains" thinking it was named that way because it seemed not to be producing anything. Finally they got to Gem City. They saw so many gem pits they were speechless but couldn't help speculate among themselves on why there was no Army protecting it. The night was falling fast as they reached the dark castle but took the Angel status surrounding it as a bad omen and decided to take shelter in one of the White castles just a bit further. As the sun rose they picked up some rations and were given some warm jackets by one of the attendants in the castle explaining how they would be passing through the "Freez Zone" and without them they would freez. As they passed through Smartland before getting to Moneytown they could see "Ignoble Peaks". Once again they wondered about the name but figured most of the land was being used for something and since Ignoble refers to not having a purpose there was no deeper meaning than that. Moneytown was covered in thick smoke coming from all the weponsmiths, recycling plants and smelters. They couldn't wait to get out there and they headed south towards Wetlands. They passed through "Science Corner" marveling at how books were produced and almost got lost in Darkwoods. As if the watermills of Wetlands were not pleasing enough to sit by and watch the wheel turn they saw the great number of Mills of Millania before pushing through to get to the Mayors house. They wondered many thing as they walked, where will they stay, what kind of work they would do, is Bushybraw really a great king?.
They arrived at the Mayors house almost at the same time as the mayor. He held the doors open and welcomed them in. After some smalltalk the family told the mayor about their intentions of finding a home and work. The mayor, with some tears swelling up in his eyes explained to the family that unfortunately there was no more room on the island to take on more settlers. He added that they did some experimentation with gunpowder trying to blow up "Wastespace Mountains" to make more room but things did not go as planned and he has not heard any updates from the people working on the project. Disappointed but with nothing they could do they grabbed their bags and headed back to "Intercept Beach". They were about to set sail back to where they came from when they saw a huge ship approaching. It was so grand they wanted to see who it was. It was one of Bushybraws Veteran generals coming back from battle. The general saw their ship and approached them. After hearing the story of the family the general told them that he had come back from an Island of Pirates and after defeating the leader he had come across some plans on how to build a pirate residence. He told them with the amount of the islands workforce they are sure they could cut down a few trees and build a residence for them to live in. The family was overjoyed they got a place to live and still do so till this day....

This was fun. Nice way to exercise my imagination. The names are fairly explanatory so I'll let your imagination fill in the fine details.

Just a few years ago, the island of Verona was wild, populated by only scattered primitive tribes. Then merchants landed on the shores and decided the abundant resources would belong to the East Blue Byte company.
Mercantile generalissimo, Atla N was sent to Verona with a corps of advisers. Five generals - the grim Mr. Williams, the foreign warfare expert Veruu Taj, the experienced Irontower, the maverick Baron Cranst, and the eccentric Gold Nose John - three explorers - all strange men by the names of Baba Morra, Perrysable, and Il Habena - and four Geologists - Halle, Skippy, Twitcher, and Dali - composed this council to assist in the takeover of Verona.
The first few months were spent with one goal in mind: eliminate the natives. The generals spent their days on the front lines, the explorers hunted out the tribes, and the geologist ensured enough metal was found to keep the armies well supplied. Supplied with advanced weaponry common to EBBC expeditions, Atla's forces soon eliminated all the natives. In a climatic final battle, the leader of the supposed savages, Wild Mary was defeated appropriately in Mary's Canyon. Immediately following this victory, Atla set about organizing an industrial operation.
He ordered his men to build dozens of sawmills in Mary's Canyon, transforming it into the Sawmill Wastes. His generals, assigned to keep the peace, encamped on a plateau across the Great River from the Sawmill Wastes, causing the plateau to be called the Plateau of the Grand Army. In order to make use of all the scrap produced by the sawmills, a group of men were sent to the forest south of the Wastes to set up recycling facilities. The resulting compound and the area in which it sat was soon called the Recycler's Glade.
Atla then set about building great monuments and statues around the base of his operations, creating the tacky Glorious Capital of Verona. He and his advisors then moved into gigantic mansions in the icy southern coasts, establishing the Imperial Coastal Tundra. Numerous sycophants, looking for kickbacks, moved to Verona and with their newfound riches erected large manors along the coasts of the lake, which they dubbed Purity Lake, in homage to their own bourgeois homogeneity. To keep them entertained, a bookmaker was set up in the Capital, with materials being produced in Bookkeeper's Valley.
As the population of Verona exploded, Atla's explorers returned from their trips with news of shadowy figures setting up strange buildings in the north. All investigations into this were met with tragic failure, and so the area was abandoned and became known as the Cursed Hinterland. When Atla's operations began to show great economic potential, a group of strange foreigners landed on his shores to offer their services. He gave them use of a small copse in the north and they began producing exotic planks, creating the Exotic Woodworker's Copse.
After a long winter, Atla suddenly demanded an ornate tower be built on a small spit of land in the far south. He then demanded a guardhouse be built at the base of the tower. No worker nor guard knew what purpose the tower served, and Atla refused to allow any settler to go near it, earning the spit the name of the Forbidden Spit.
Now, as clouds gather on the horizon, rogues have invaded the southern shores, setting up numerous encampments. Atla fears for the safety of his settlement he fought so hard for, raising 5000 troops in preparation for the worse. Now the future of Veron lies uncertain, to be determined on Rogue's Peninsula.

A tour of “Misty Angles,” the 9 hole golf course on John-Axe Island:

    First hole – par 3 – “Wheat’s Revenge”
From a distance it looks idyllic – lovely fields glistening and waving before the mild offshore breeze. Then you hit your shot and hold your breath, because if you land in one of the wheat fields your ball is GONE.

Second hole – par 5 – “Squirrels’ Delight”
A long straight approach over two water hazards into a hive of oaken productivity. If you hit one of the majestic oaks, you will hear the reverberation as your ball ricochets off one tree after another.

Third hole – par 5 – “Encyclopedic Fade”
A second long approach, which if you go right you meet mountains. Yes, mountains. If you have a fade shot in your repertoire, use it. The green is hidden within smaller mountains in the midst of the John-Axe Publishing Company.

    Fourth hole – par 3 – “Millionaire’s Pitch”
Rarely does a kingdom let you traverse its key revenue source. Here you get to pitch into the center of it. The gold mine, gold smelter, and coinage facility never run during course play. But the gold tower will be in full operation as you walk close by to access the green. If you have never heard the sound of newly minted gold coins cascading a hundred feet into a pile of landed coins, the soothing nature will astonish you. It is surprisingly refreshing to hear new gold coins tumble.

Fifth hole – par 4 – “Seven Springs”
Literally seven springs continually serve up some of the finest water east of nearby Aquila Plume Resort. Nowhere near as famous, first time visitors delight in the offerings of this delectable wonder surrounding the fifth green. Feel free to sample any or all after you putt.

Sixth hole – par 5 – “Eternal Copse”
You now approach the baffling miracle of the copse of trees which could not be cut down. As described in entry 822 on page 83 in http://forum.thesettlersonline.net/t...ght=screenshot, the John-Axe Islanders tried to clear all the superfluous trees from the Island. They wanted to maximize building opportunities. The trees you aim for refused to be cut down, so the eastern farms were built around them.

Seventh hole – par 4 - “Billowing Shadows”
You will never see the green, not even with a telescopic device. That is because you are aiming for the industrial center of the Island. Here the coking plants and recycling manufactories run all day and night, emitting dark plumes which shroud the small green within. Aim, close your eyes, swing, and hope. At least the Island shuts down two of the coking plants during course play, so you can see to putt.

Eighth hole – par 4 – “Christmas Draw”
A long par 4. Now you must play a draw shot to avoid the mountains on your left. Why “Christmas?” Because this is the massive pine tree harvesting center of John-Axe Island. Don’t blink, or the tree you use to line up your shot might be felled before you swing. Don’t be surprised if up to 5 trees are harvested between your approach and your putt.

Ninth hole – par 4 – “Carriage Smack”
The final hole involves lofting your ball over the back of the Mayor’s House into the courtyard. The hole’s name recalls the days carriages were left in the courtyard during play, where they could be hit. The carriages are now stored in the modern nearby Rarity Provision House.

Some useful and informative Cartography featuring Efficient Building Placement.

The numbers in the production efficiency key represent seconds from a work-yard to the storehouse. The closer the work-yard is to a resource the more efficient your production will be.

These are the best resource locations for efficient production chains that I could find.

An average day in the Kingdom of Heaven starts out after a goodnight sleep in the Floating residence on Lake Zittie. Named after a benefactor in KoH guild who generously donated guild coins to purchase the Floating residence.

Then it's off to the Generals Gardens named after another benefactor in KoH Guild who generously donated gold coins for the purchase of upgrades. I build wells and sow wheat fields on the prime efficiency farm to make brew and bread for breakfast.

With renewed energy from my morning brew and toast I feed the fish in the Centrifuge Fishin Hole named after another generous benefactor in KoH Guild and put out deer musk in Venison Canyon bringing the deer in close for the slaughter.

I now make sandwiches for lunch and feed all the hungry settlers. With energized workers I build gold mines in the Golden Peaks and iron mines in the iron foothills. Send out Geologists to find marble in Marble Gulch and stone in Stoner Cliffs named after another generous benefactor in KoH Guild who helps us low level players get through adventures.

With all my settlers hard at work it's time for me to find more villains to bring to justice. I recruit some retired bandits and train them in Achtung's Barracks, named after another generous benefactor in KoH Guild. I can now head to the Island of the Pirates and send them all to their maker for judgement.

After plundering the Pirates treasures I can make some trades in the Trade Office to make some gold coins and improve my settlers work-yards.

After a long day of killing miscreants, trading and building its time to relax as I enjoy a cold brew and conversation with my neighbors. Its a very friendly community in the Kingdom of Heaven, friends always willing to help out a neighbor. We joke and laugh about another average day in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Thanks to all the cool people in the Kingdom of Heaven Guild for making this game more enjoyable and a special thank you to all the generous benefactors in KoH Guild who help us experience more of what this game has to offer.

Born on Lost Island, TH magically became the CEO of Dough Boy Bakeries Incorporated after graduating from Bread Crumb University in 2013. He's a very forgetful baker. Needless to say, he has burnt a few thousand metric tons of bread, but brought glory to his fellow settlers by making Bread Mountain out of all the burnt bread. Not all his successes stemmed from failure. He managed to amass enough wealth from all the unburnt bread to invest in the even more lucrative business of geyser-fresh water. And that's how Plenty of Water Plaza began. The water business was booming. Not long after his initial investment, he expanded Northeastward, to what is now known as Burning Water Valley. Some say the name came from his history of all that burnt bread, but the truth is that he has the best guildies a settler could ask for. They make his wells sparkle with that mesmerizing golden shine, which make the wells appear to be on FIRE! This captivating scene can be viewed from Mt. Waterview. His water fortunes made it possible to found places like the Water Rich Village, the Water Rich Ridge and the Water Rich Lake. He also thought it would be funny to name the dinky stream Pathetic Stream because it paled in comparison to his water empire. He recently began a new venture into the Marble business, buying the property rights and naming the center island mass Massive Marble Mountain.

Special Thanks to my guildmates cinnyr, and Alliw, for making my island shine!
