i remember the way "The Settlers" loaded on my old Amiga A500 ... (very slowly for one part) but you used to watch a Knight, Similar to the one on the box-art ride across the countryside to a piece of theme music, every time he hit the end of the piece, the computer would stop reading from its floppy drive and ask for another disk ... it took 3 mins total to load the game if i remember correctly, how they ever managed to fit the game on 3 floppy disks ill never know ... also, how said floppy disks survived being handled by me from the age of 4 to the age of 12 ... i also wont ever know.

I played and still have all the disks for settlers 1-7 plus anniversary edition. I played them all. My favorites were 2-4, just because they random generated map abilities.

i saw this thread earlier and was going to post that i've loved "the settlers" since the very first time i played settlers 1 on my amiga, except "heritage of kings" which i hated.deeply... then i decided that before i posted, i would visit the game-graveyard in the basement and re-install number 5, just to be sure. i've had a great day ! turns out that settlers 5 is not as bad as i remembered (even though, let's be honest, it's not a settlers game...), i'm now busily re-installing all kinds of retro stuff and having a whale of a time :--)

what a great forum thread !!!

was just talking to someone in game who said this game reminded him of settlers whateverversion, he did not realize this was the current incarnation of it until i sent him here. I guess you have a new player.
