The time of day matters a bit, you have to get the timing right and during busy server times the maneuvers are relayed to the server more slowly. (take the BB trivias for example... the devs screen look completely different from everyone elses) Server lag will jack your timings up and you're probably better off doing blocks during off peak hours.
don't forget that it only works with normal generals

Is that why I couldn't get it to work with my battle hardened generals?...I don't see how that would make a difference though.
It does work with any kind of General, but the battle hardened General does fight faster, so your timing has to be perfect. I'd recommend sending a regular general with 1 recruit, 1 bowmen and 1 militia as that gives you around 8 seconds of fighting. That why your timing doesn't have to be that perfect.
Basically you want the blocking general to hit the camp before your main general gets into its aggro range. Timing is important since he has to get past that aggro range w/o agroing himself and start engaging the other camp. The newer block techniques that have been coming out with advanced blocking are a bit safer once you work out the path timings though.
What are these "newer blocking techniques?" can you tell us how it works or point to a guide?
Get chrome or load a translator onto your tool bar and go to the german site. When you actually start looking at all the tactic cards it will have a legend that says whether it uses reg blocks or advanced blocking. You'll have to do manual translations for text on images though. It's worth it if you don't want to run the half *** adventure guides written in the US forums.
Had what looked like a successful block, as both camps were engaged. I went away from the screen, to find out that the blocking camp had lost as expected, but my main force left it's fight to move to the blocking camp. Looking back (replays) it evidently never was really engaging the main camp even though the graphic showed it was. So trying to save a few hundred recruits costs me almost as many soldiers.
What is the magic number for blocking size, and how to you know that your blocking is actually working. I really thought my main force was engaging the main camp. I had already aborted two attempts because I could tell the that the main force was there to early.
