How can I kill a big bandit leader?

What is the secret to killing the bandit leader that has 9000 hit points, 100 roughnecks, dogs and rangers?

I fill up my regiment and send them out to battle and they loose every time without doing any real damage to the bandits at all. They are rubbish. They should kill the dogs and rangers first but instead they always go for the leader and so never get anywhere.

So I created another regiment to send out immediately after the first one. Same thing.
