Sadly this just happened to me and my adventure partner. I clicked accept and at the time I was not involved in any other adventure. My generals were all at home, and my troops had also returned from the adventure this morning. Ironically we waited to start because of reading this post the other day, but alas it seems to no avail.
Dang.. I was hoping that was the only cause. Send a bug report.
Oh, If he invited you yesterday before all the server troubles then I know what probably happened because it happened to me. You may not of received the invite and then it took over 19 hours for the autodecline to take effect cause the servers had lost time or something. I had sent an invite and my friend didn't receive it but still showed waiting for confirmation. About 19 hours later when I was about to finish the adventure it finally auto declined and I was able to invite them.
Not sure if it was support or just rebooting, but he did get on the adventure with me. We did send in a support ticket, and they responded within a reasonable amount of time. We checked his account and the adventure was now there.
I am just guessing but maybe they did do something, or maybe it was the worst server lag in history as he refreshed, relogged and then rebooted the machine. Either way it got worked out in our case.
Added another bug that just happened to me today in my original post.

Hello, Hope this helps:
From: In-game Support [ingame.support@thesettlersonline.net]
"Thank you for sending in your question. The adventure is available on their end however they may need to access it from the quest log instead of the normal box on the right side of their screen.
'The Settlers Online' Support Team"
The "Quest Log" referenced is the tag with the "!" on it just next to your avatar's picture in the upper left hand corner of your screen where you get your normal and daily Quests from. If you're active in an Adventure and you do not see the normal Adventure tab on the right side of your screen then you can access the Adventure through this alternative method...
Had similar issues with invited player...
