For now I'm fine with waiting some extra time to get enough stone to build a Tavern, or waiting 6 hours to find treasure, but I'd leave this game if we were FORCED to buy gems, which removes the "free" in this game. I don't want to buy gems, so does anyone foresee this becoming a "pay to play" game?
NOTE: I'm not complaining, just wondering.
I have guildmates that play without buying gems and make it along just fine from the weekly log ins, the new level rewards, or the hand me outs when they do happen. They buy gem items with coins and things like that. So really its how you want to play and what you feel like doing. If you don't want to pay for gems then don't, it's really that easy. Now you will notice the people who do buy gems usually have a lot more on their island and produce more goods etc...but that's to be expected. Common sense says the guys who pay do get a bit of an upper hand.

Not a chance. The team knows (like all good dev teams in this business) that doing that would be the death-knell for the game. Have no fear.
You also get gems every 7 days you log on. Also they just gave us like 250 gems for easter.
