Combat is about efficiency, losing the least amount of troops, for the largest gain. With that in mind these are my contributions:
1. Kill a map using the fewest possible troops, this means on things like witch of the swamp, don't kill the zone bosses leading to the final witch spire. The exp gain is NOT worth the troop losses. On any map that can be killed without destroying every camp you should be looking for ways to avoid engaging enemies.
2. Do no try to get maximum exp on every map. The exp gain is NOT worth the loss of troops, you will gain more resources by sticking to the bare minimum and thereby improve your city faster.

LIVE on this site. check every fight before you send troops, regardless of what guide you may be following, you will *always* be able to find efficiencies where you save, at the very least, recruits. Sometimes on the order of several hundred depending on the map.

Always double and triple check both the troops in the target camp (some of the guides are sometimes wrong) and the troops you are sending. Close the general box and reopen it to be sure the troops you have selected are actually selected.
-
You can save troops by taking out the leader camps and leaving any non-leader camps that don't intercept your general.

Recruit
More than one general at a time can attack separate targets if you send the first one to the closer target.

Never attack with less than a full complement of troops, if necessary return to your island to pick up more, or wait over night till they are trained. That is why they give 2 to 4 days to complete an adventure.

How is that a pro tip for battles?

One limiting factor to how often you can attack is how fast you can create recruits. There are only 6 copper mines. Keep them build and buffed at all times, as well as buffing enough copper smelters and bronze weapon smiths to maximize the number of bronze swords ( ie recruits ) you can build.

Ensure you have ensure manpower to win the match. Buy a second general and create it's own garrison. You can move your garrisons so they are close to the battle site to save time.

When you PULL DOWN any gem purchased item like the noble house, watermills etc... they are not lost, they go back to your Star Menu and you can rebuild and move them freely
