Use you Veteran General to his fullest. His extra troop capacity, 50% less travel and heal times might just save you while your in a pinch. Same goes with the Battle Hardened General

There's lots of good tips here.

But if you are a newbie:

    just slow down

You really shouldn't think about going out on an adventure until you have at least 500 trained troops, and another
500 settlers in your star waiting for training.

When you get to level 26 (27?), you'll be awarded your first adventure, Bounty Hunter.

Go ahead and do that one to learn how to move back and forth from your island to a combat zone.

You can also buy (I think it's 10 fish) a second copy of Bounty Hunter in the store menu. Good deal!
But you can only buy one.

After that, understand that pretty much any adventure you choose will result in losing 500+ fighters.
Some will cost you way more than 500

And remember how long it takes for your settlers to re-populate. (About 12 minutes just for one, so 500 takes 100 hours, that's over FOUR DAYS!)

Build up your residences, and your weapons, and make lots of bread so you can get extra people from the provision house. Then, AND ONLY
    THEN should you start adventuring!!

Others may disagree, but I think you need to be at least level 30 or so before you'll be ready, and by that time, clearing your island will
teach you a lot about how to conduct combat!

    Good luck!

When you do the Dark Priest Adventure you can actually take the dark castle in 1 wave. Sidv adventure guide is great but the 250 veteran general was not available when it was written. The guide calls for 2 waves 132r for the 1st wave and you loose all theses recruits, the second wave calls for 80 recruits and 170 Longbow with an additional loss of 25 recruits and a general that is lost for 2-4 hours depending on which general you are using, a regular one or a veteran. With the veteran 250 troop general you can take the Dark castle with one wave of 125 calv., 40 militia and 85 soldiers with a loss of 39 militia 26 calv. and 28 soldiers. You do not loose a general for 2-4 hours and you don't loose a total of 157 recruits, I know people say recruits are cheap to replace but as for me i will take the single wave attack and save my recruits for another adventure, which i can start with all my generals instead of being short one for a period of time. Good luck and Good Gaming to you all.

    Bounty hunter

The first adventure awarded to players reaching level 26 is Bounty hunter. This is a tutorial adventure which teaches you how to move from your island to a combat zone. The only thing it doesn't tell you is what to use to beat this adventure without any losses, Use 100 calv. or horses. This is all you need to beat this adventure but pay attention to what the tutorial is telling you because you will need it as you do other and more advanced adventures.

Actually, it doesn't work like that. When you complete an adventure, every General is fully recovered when they return to your island. So even a Tavern General, who lost a battle 2 mins before you completed an adventure, will be fully recovered 30 minutes later when he returns from the adventure.

As for your trade off in troop losses, to each their own. But losing 25 cavalry means consuming 1,000 horses and 750 beer. The beer alone would cover 75 recruits.

make sure to load all of your troops back onto generals before you complete the last quest in an adventure. If you do not, any stranded troops will take an hour and half to travel badck to your island.

The combat simulator is the best way to find your way to victory first. and never use cavs against first strike capable enemies.
