Limited access and long upgrades

I am going to be going on a cruise soon and Internet access will be very limited. I had planned to start a couple lvl 5 upgrades, so they could upgrade while I was away, but since then I have learned that upgrades stop after 24 hours of no access ( I tested this on test a couple weeks ago).

So my question: if I take my iPad and pay for enough connection time to login to my account on a daily basis (obviously not into game as I don't have flash avail) will that count for accessing the game so that my upgrade keeps chugging along?

Any other solutions other then lugging a laptop and paying through the nose for Internet access?

The game should keep from going into sleep mode if you can get a friend to buff a few of your buildings through out the week, just ask them to buff a few buildings that wont completely throw off your production chains; like water mills if you have any.
