The actual description of what you're buying should be more specific so you know what you're getting.
No more money spent on this game by me if that's the kind of garbage I'm going to get for it.

It really depends on how much you enjoy, or don't enjoy, micromanagement. If you like micromanagement, or simply feel it is not worth the price, than the Silo is definitely not for you. However, set up properly they will allow multiple farms to draw from one wheat field with zero maintenance.

As Carcator said, it depends much on your playstyle. If you are likely to get online and stay for an hour or more, silos may not be needed since you will refill the wheatfield yourself (with some people, refilling is a get-to-be-online motivation :P). If you don't have time and want an automatic island, silo is a must-have, not mention it will save you a lot of space. You also don't need to spend your real money, there are gem sellers. And um...global/help tab is useful to ask for an item's function before you decide to buy
