Jon, the settler, was stopping off at the storehouse to pick up a stack of firewood for his home tonight. Tomorrow was the Thanksgiving Celebration, which gave Jon pause to consider what he was thankful for this year. And what a difficult year it had been. Early in the year, Jon had started a courier business, taking supplies from shop to shop for a fee. The business had started off quite well, so well that his wife Anabella had left her position as teacher at the island school to do the bookkeeping.
A few months later, a recession hit the kingdom of MerryAyla, causing the island shop owners to tighten their purses and cease utilizing Jon's courier service. Fortunately, Jon was a scrapper. He had been spending time at the auctions talking with friends and watching the transactions. Jon had noticed that supplies would often sell for far less than their actual value. Jon had an idea. He began buying the under-priced supplies and reselling them for their actual value, keeping the hefty profit to feed his family. His clever wife supplemented their income tutoring island children and making clothes and linens for the island residents. The recession had ended many a business, and many a marriage in return. Fortunately for Jon, the stressful time actually strengthened his with Anabella. They had stuck together and used their creativity and talents to create their own income.
As Jon hefted the cord of wood onto his strong shoulder, a big smile crossed his face. He knew that a tasty meal and a sweet, loving wife awaited his return tonight. And for that, he felt the most thankful settler in the kingdom.
