what is a good way to set up your island

Each production building has a cycle time and a travel time. Many buildings need to be near deposits. All buildings benefit from being near a storehouse. You can affect the travel time by careful placement of buildings. I cluster production buildings around the storehouses in little industrial parks.

For example you could place three farms in front of a storehouse and then their wheat fields on the other side of the farms away from the storehouse. (Another hint, build one wheat field first, then your three farms then more wheat fields. The field will be ready for all three farms when they come online--time counts a lot in this game.)

Residences, barracks, tavern, trade office and provision house all don't matter where you place them. Place them, along with the various decorations you get, in any aesthetic pattern that floats your boat as long as it leaves clear spaces near storehouses for production buildings.

Note that your mayor's house is a big storehouse. Also note that all the buildings face the same way and their entries are all facing the same way.

I suggest placing the residents on the fringes of the map where you are unable to place multiple buildings around storehouses.
