    Valentine Contest Submissions

It's that time of year again: pink hearts and chocolates are lining the shelves of stores. Valentine's Day approaches! To commemorate the holiday of love, we're bringing back our Valentine's contest again! This year, there's a slight twist to it, however. In order to make sure everyone can participate, there are two ways to enter this particular contest!

    Create a Settlers-themed Valentine!
One of our favorite parts of Valentines Day as a kid was picking out the perfect Valentines to give to all your friends! This year, we want to see some really awesome Settlers-themed ones. There were quite the entries last year (as seen in the examples below) and we're curious if you guys can top them! It can be any size or style, as long as it is themed to The Settlers Online and appropriate.

You can find some various bits of art work to help you out here: The Settlers Online official fan kit for some great art, as well as grab our logo here! We also have a fantastic compilation of concept art here.
Write a Valentine's letter from one of your Settlers!
If writing is more your style, rather than creating pictures, you can enter with a sweet letter! Sometimes a Settler needs more than a Love Potion and Gift Basket to win another's heart. Set yourself in the shoes of one of your Settlers and write a wonderful love letter to their potential sweetheart, asking them to be their Valentine! As long as it's appropriate, and from the viewpoint of one of your Settlers, you can feel free to come up with whatever narrative you like.

    Dearest Sally the Fisherwoman,

I've been too shy in the past to gather the courage and tell you how I feel, but the Love Potion our Mayor Meesherbeans passed around has given me the confidence to finally let loose the truth. We've known each other since we were children. I'll never forget the day your parents moved in next door; it was a shabby little level 3 Residence back then, but you were so proud of living on a pond. Hard to believe that was 20 years ago...

Anyway. We've spent countless hours together in the tavern, celebrating with our friends every time I come home from a mission safely. It's tough work, being a Recruit, but someone has to do it. Defending our little island from bandits is the most important job. Defending you. I don't know if you're waiting for someone else or what, but I need you to know that every time I return victorious, deep down I'm wishing that I am returning to you. You're an amazing woman and I know a lowly Recruit can't possibly offer you everything you deserve, but I would love, honor and respect you. We could build a life together.

I'm shipping out tomorrow for another mission, but I'm hoping that when I come back, I'll be returning home to my lady. Take care of yourself, Sally.

    Yours,
    Bob the Recruit

I was a body with my heart beats going on my breathing going. But my mind was dead. After dad died at the hands of those murderous bandits I was not able to mix with the outer world. No one wanted me except you. You are an angel in disguise of a human. You made me capable of believing in myself and helped me gaining confidence. You made me into a human from the vegetable I was. Thank you very very much for all the efforts you put in to my well being. I am very grateful to you for that. Now my heart doesn’t reside within me. It resides with you for you. If I am the heart you are the beat, I am the breath you are the air. You have become an indispensable part of my life. My love is greater for you than it is for anyone else. You have been a good friend, taken care of me like a caring mother, helped me in times when what I needed was someone who loved me not for their interests but who loved me unconditionally. I didn’t understand it before but now I do understand fully. So in this festival of love, trust, faith, and with a promise to live all of our life together I ask you “Will you be my Valentine?”

To the Friary wench, a poem of love titled: WILD BIRD
The day you came along my way
I heard the words you had to say
and knew that you would not be mine
and that I shouldn't waste my time
For you are as a wild bird, free
With many things to do and see
and places that you want to go
and people that you want to know
Yet still I try to keep you near
Still I try to make you hear
The words I think will make you stay
But every time you go away
For won't a wild bird in a cage
against its captor show its rage?
Come and see me when you want
and don't explain it if you can't
come only of your own accord
I do not want to be your lord
so live your life from day to day
But should your feelings ever sway
And you feel you need a rest
Wild bird come fly into my nest.
    Love, Hardwood Harry

    Dear Lady at the Well,
I have seen you walking along the path to your well and have wondered what your name might be. I am very shy about coming to you without being introduced. My name is Wesley the Brewer. My brewery is two buildings past the mayor's house. You are new to this island and I have not been able to find someone to introduce me to you.

    Letter to Lucinda:
    Dearest Lucinda,
I wrote to your father to disclose I wish to court you.
May that allay any fear you had I do not welcome your advances.
I told him you overwhelmed me at the dance. You did.
I thought you were interested in water extraction and transport.
I had no idea you were visiting your “friend” at the coal mine
just to walk through the south field of wells and see me.
The fact I never knew makes those moments so memorable now.
I cannot stop thinking about you.
I replay your words at the dance over and over.
I find myself emptying buckets not remembering I filled them let alone
walked them 500 paces to the storehouse.
    I am smitten.
I am in love with a baker’s daughter.
    Hopelessly.
    Never doubt your beauty.
    Your freckles are not defects,
they are wondrous glitter highlighting your smile.
I beg you not to cut short your golden hair, not if I get to have a say in it.
And your laugh is lyrical comfort.
Please think on why you chose me, from all the others here, and hold it to your heart.
I have so much more to offer, if you allow.
Only from now on, please don’t just joke with me when you visit.
Take my hand and look at me with those eyes that awed me at the dance.
You went from a fun girl in a field who laughed at my jokes,
to someone who made all around her disappear from vision.
Let me see those eyes more.
    There is only one problem.
You approached me at the dance when they played the song about the blackbird stealing the pie.
That is now our song of romance.
Can you please choose a song to mark this courtship at the next dance,
so we can request the band play it and make it “our song”?
I fear theft should not be associated with what we have.
May you never regret approaching me, and granting me hope of your love.
I will strive to prove I am worthy of your love.
And yes, the fish cookies were amazing.
Only could you make them that delicious.
    Gratefully yours,
    (as your father permits),
    Horatio

    Letter to Lucinda’s father:
    Dear Mr. Baker:
Your daughter Lucinda overwhelmed me at the village dance Friday, as you witnessed.
I have returned her affections by letter this day,
but want to assure you I will honor your direction regarding my conduct.
So I write to let you know, per her invitation, I am courting her, if you permit me to continue.
As to my employment and future plans, I have served as water fetcher for two years now,
since arriving on this island with my brother. We share a house together.
We both know water fetchers are often recruited into the army during the times their wells are dry.
If called, I will gladly go to defend my new home.
I would request longbow, since my arms are quite strong from fetching.
I draw a heavy bow with ease.
In the meantime, I have studied Milling for six months.
Shortly I should be able to request being assigned to that job.
I hope my career goal pleases you.
    Your daughter is a treasure.
I do not wish to offend you. I do wish to keep courting her.
    Sincerely,
    and with respect,
    Horatio Fetcher

    Dear Lady at the Well,

My brewery is two buildings past the mayor's house. You are new to this island and I have not been able to find someone to introduce me to you.
Would you consider allowing me to stop by and walk you to your home tomorrow after the lady in sky has gone to sleep? I would also like to ask you to consider attending the Valentine's Day Dance with me which is on the 14th at the Mayor's House. You could ask my friend, Tom the butcher, who delivered this note, concerning me and then maybe send word by him whether I may stop by.
    Sincerely,
    Wesley the Brewer

    Dear Wesley,
Thank you ever so much for the sweet time at the Dance. I do so enjoy a lively reel. I also have enjoyed our walks home at night.
My parents have agreed to us seeing more of each other if you were interested in such things. Please I hope you do not consider me too forward in saying that. My father told me that you had asked him for such a thing.
    Cordially your friend,
    Kathrine

Dearest Kathrine, the sweetest lady at the well,
Do you remember our first real date? I remember it so like it was yesterday. That Valentine's dance one year ago was the beginning of the brightest days of my life. Your bright smile shines in my mind every night while I wait for the next day to see you. Your kindness to your parents and your baby sister draws me to you everyday. The beauty Our Lord has given you makes me weep with gladness. The way you work so diligently astounds me also with the its beauty.
You my dear are the love of my life. Will you be mine? Would you consider being My Forever Valentine? That is, would you be my wife and be my Valentine every year for the rest of our lives? I love you truly, dear Kathrine. I will stop by your well tonight to hear your answer, my dear heart.
Your forever Valentine if you just say the word,
    Wesley

Can we make an actual valentine's day card and scan it in? Is that valid?

Settler John and the Lady with the 199 dogs – A Valentine’s Day Love Story

Every morning, Settler John got up and walked to the watermill behind the Mayor’s house to collect water to start the bread production for the day. One morning Mary, the lady who lived on the hill with her 199 dogs appeared. Mary said her dogs were thirsty after a fierce battle against a general who galloped across her sector unannounced. After helping Mary with the water, Settler John invited her to stay a while. The two sat in the middle of the wheat fields and talked about each other’s battles. Settler John noticed that Mary’s eyes gleamed with excitement as he talked about the battles she had fought alongside her dogs. Mary invited Settler John to join her, but John was too busy collecting water for his bread production. After all, John had many other settlers to feed. Settler John and Mary spent many days lazing around the wheat fields and watching the birds fly.

Later on, John noticed that Mary seemed to get bored. Still, Mary would hang about with him. One day, Settler John decided to surprise Mary. He took her to the Mayor’s garden where a great big angel gate stood looking splendidly picturesque. For each step the two lovers took towards the angel gate, Mary and Settler John seemed to get closer together; having a laugh and talking with ease. Once by the angel gate, among the colorful flowers, they held hands and at that moment, John finally had the courage to ask Mary to be his Valentine. From that moment on, Settlers online was never the same as Settler John joined Mary and her dogs in the battles against the evil generals invading those camps in sector 9.

…and together they happily fought their battles in the Settlers online game each Valentine’s Day.
Still around from time to time.
