Guard Dogs and Rangers

OK I am confused some of what I have read said to use cavalry and others said not to, so what is it? Second what is the best unit to fight these two units? Is there units that I should leave home?

Basically I'd just use the combat simulator or an island clearing guide which gives you the best option possible.

Recruits can be used to kill guard dogs 1:1 rate.

however if there is not enough rangers, you can just use recruits and militia/soldiers to clear both, as using cavalry or bowmen would cause the guard dogs to target them.
I'd rather lose 8 recruits versus 1 cavalry any day.
