I am sorry if this breaks the rule, but THIS NEEDS TO BE TAKEN WITH A NOTE OF CAUTION. Veteran and battle hardened generals fight twice as fast. This means they should be used ONLY in the attack that is meant to kill the camp. The actual block needs to be done ONLY with a regular general. If you can afford $25 to spend on gems and lack a veteran general, GET IT. It is by far the single best gem purchase you will EVER make. the 250 units of the veteran general make it far more efficient than the battle hardened general.

in the late games where you can produce high-tier units; low tiers like recruits, etc can be used as meat shields to protect your expensive from damage. Higher tier bowmen can be shielded from 1st strikes by lower tier bowmen as they all have 10HP. Strangely enough, since militia and cannoneers have the same 60HP, militias can be used to shield cannoneers from 1st strikes. Only use Cavalry when it's necessary.

if you get higher tier units, don't stop making low tier weapon as you need low soldiers as fodder.

Put non production buildings (such as houses, trade office, provision house) in out of the way places and not around storehouses or big open areas. Try to put the storehouses in open areas to get as many production buildings around it. Use the storehouses to increase production by reducing travel time - the lower the production time the higher your production.

Once you hit around lvl 21, it's advised to get a second geologist. You start being more dependent on your ore productions to keep up with raw materials for weapons. Copper's easy to find (5 mins) but later you are allowed to search for marble (30 mins), iron (1 hr), to coal and gold ore (4 hrs). if you've been away for a few days, i'd be difficult to jump start your economy fast enough as you have to search for each deposit individually through one geologist. A total of 3 geologist can be purchased through the inn at steeper prices per geologist.

A special geologist can be purchased with gems that can search for deposits faster.

Own 2 geologists. 1 is just not enough unless you intend to live at your keyboard.

The best thing to buy with the gems given for free are building licenses, save them and you can purchase up to 4 building licenses once you're level 30-35. Once your island is cleared you don't gain more.

Make tools in your provision house and save the coal and copper ore of running a toolmaker.
Still around from time to time.

Wells are a island planners best friend. You can put up a lot of wells in new areas to enable you to see and plan where buildings will fit best. Then after a couple of days, the wells will run dry and you can then place the buildings you really want in the best places possible. And you will have a lot of water to boot!

Pro tip: Whenever there is a special event like Halloween, Christmas, Easter, make sure you participate and get as many of whatever needs to be collected as you can, do not trade these items for resources. Save them and if possible trade for more, the prizes in these events are the best prices you will ever get for a veteran general, battle hardened general, savage scout or a jolly geologist, not to mention the special buffs as well. You can make far more gold after the event is over selling the buffs than you can by selling the items from the event.
