Similarly with wells... Level 1 wells give 1000 water for 10 pinewood planks and 15 stones against Level 2 wells which give 1500 water for 10 hardwood planks and 15 marbles. In the provision house, 5 pinewood planks = 1 hardwood plank and 5 stones = 1 marble. So Level 1 wells are better value for resource.

Take notes on your own adventures. Guides are useful, but usually not optimized - you can take notes about what worked and what didn't and do better on the same adventure next time!

Circle your buildings around storage buildings. The further they are from a storage building, the longer the production time ultimately - even with planters. They go to the storage building for seed and then go out to a site to plant it.
-
While level 1 wells are better value for resource, they also need rebuilt more often. Save time instead of resource - buy upgraded wells and wheat fields even if they cost a little more resource. We all have lives outside of Settlers, after all!
-
Clump similar building types together - you gain nothing by spreading pinewood planters/cutters and hardwood planters/cutters across your island. In fact, you guarantee a longer commute and lower production rate. If you have five on one side and five on the other side, sometimes they'll hike the whole ways across your island to plant/cut instead of planting/cutting closer to home. Put all 10 in one area and they'll have much shorter commutes.

There are a ton of ways to get something quick, it always comes with a price. Take your time.

When you claim a new sector, before you place a storehouse try referring to a map placement guide first. You can't move storehouses, you have to destroy them if you don't like where they were placed. If you've already placed storehouses, don't level them up until you're for certain that's the spot they are going to stay.

Roads are a good tool to use when planning out where to place buildings around a storehouse. This helps maximize productivity.
-
If you're just starting out don't get ahead of your quests, you'll end up running out of resources and essentially make things much harder for yourself.
-
You can place your foresters anywhere near the resource site, they don't need to be near a storehouse or your mayors house.
