There are three types of buildings.

The first is collection buildings (farms, mines, foresters, hunters, fisheries) that need to travel from a workshop, to a location, to the storehouse, and then back to the workshop.

The second are stand-alone buildings (smelters, weaponsmiths, deerstalkers, etc) that only need to travel from the workshop to the storehouse and back again.

The last are the 2x3 buildings (friary, waterwheels) that have an entrance offset to one side of the bottom of the building, instead of in the center.

The most efficient layout for stand-alone buildings are these, depending upon how many storehouses you want to build per X workshops:

If you're going to put in a 2x3 building, it should always be to the right of the storehouse.

Flooding the Trade Office with baskets is a quick way to bank up your gold coin. Use those building spaces wisely, build up those farms and keep the hunters and fisheries well stocked.

Make a habbit of doing things in a certain order when you login. for instance:

(optional) if you know your going to be on for more than 30 minutes,
Start by buffing what is important to you with fish platters
then you can buff them again with a longer buff before you leave
that way you get more buffed time.
    1. load up your build queue with fields to rebuild
    2. Check for mines to 're-discover' and send out your geologiest.
    3. while your looking at geologists, make sure your explorers are busy
    4. Do any of your fishing spots or hunting grounds need to be replinshed?
    5. build new fish food and deer fragrance
    6. build new buffs (always build replacement food-stuff first. don't use up you stuff building buffs and not be able to build food)
    7. check your economy, looking for any production that is falling behind
    8. check your quest book for anything to do
    9. Check your troops/generals, ready to attack or need more troops?
    10. check your mail
    11. unload your star menu into your mayor's house
    12. check on trades, anything you want to buy or sell?
    13. any thing else you want to build in the provision house?
14, buf any friends you normally buff.
    15. buff your imporant buildings before you sign off.

Such a habbit will organize your time. You will get more done, and hopfully not forget to do something.
And if you get interrupted, you might better remember where you were and what you did and didn't do yet.

what i say is to buy all three of the geologists as fast as you can. and two generals just in case one dies and if one general is on one side of the map and another one on the other side to move your troops faster. another is to always have more producers(farms, wells, mines, fishermen, etc...) than consumers(like everything else).

another tip is when you get an improved drill plan or something with alot of worth, sell it on trade for coins.

Save your gold. Instead, trade resources for the things you need.

Upgrading the buildings at the top of the chain in this order is best: Bread, Marble, then Bronze sword/Tools with current market prices. Also I prefer upgrading the top of the chain and building more supply buildings, compared to the inverse (so buffs are more effective).

If you want to do some researches or some own projects, let try it in TSO-testing first.

Build your buildings around your storehouses or as close as possible. The shorter the distance the workers travel will increase production. It may seem like a small increase but it will definitely help in the long run.
