Confused about geologists coming back empty handed

So I just hit level 23 and can start searching for coal, but every time I send my geologists out to look for coal they come back empty handed. I log in look around at all the mountains and can't see any new deposits anywhere. So why aren't they finding any coal?

On a related note is there a way to see what the geologist result is rather than being logged in and looking at the screen for the 2 seconds the result is shown? It took several times of not finding marble to happen to be logged in to see that I had reached the maximum amount of allowed deposits of that type. Hopefully some day it will let me have more than one marble deposit.

I notice that marble, copper, and iron all seem to appear in roughly the same spots usually of two different mountain ranges for each, do I need to finish conquering the far north to find a coal deposit? I just have the bandit leader camp with Skunk left and I'm replenishing troops before taking him on.

Every node appears in exactly the same spot.

If you have not claimed a sector where coal is located, they cannot find it.
