Newbie requiring help

Fairly new here. And never having played this game before I'm struggling.

Currently at level 26.

Have bugger all gold to update my buildings & residences.

Want to conquer the next sector but every scenario says I'll lose my army (what will defeat 25 guard dogs and 120 rangers????)

Don't understand the guild thing - how to join, how it works.

Don't understand the help/trade/whisper thing at the bottom left hand screen.

Can someone please explain all this?????

1. gold takes time. try building extra water wells and sell the water for gold.

3. guilds are a group of people to enjoy playing with. many offer help with advice, resources, buffs, and offer games.
look at the guild list (click the shield), pick one u like, and contact their leader. or just ask in global-1, recruiters hang out there.

4. That's your chat window, the tabs at the bottom are different rooms. Go to help to ask questions. Global is general chat, trade is where people advertise, whisper is one-on-one chat.

I don't know how to use the chat. I tried clicking on it, and can see it, but can't type in it. (I know, it sounds stupid)

Make sure you are on a tab other than News.
Click in the dark bar below the tabs. That is where you type.

No, it's there. The very bottom of the image you posted, in the left corner under the tabs of the chat window.
It looks like it doesn't belong to the chat window stuff but it is where you type what you want to say.
Hit "Enter" and it pops up into the chat window.
[edit: I could have said that better. Click in the window the arrow points to. Type what you want to say. Hit enter.]

I hit enter, typed and nothing changed. Still can't do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is NOT WORKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
