I understand they are trying to sell gems. But the merchant pop up just makes me angry and I wouldn't buy anything from someone I'm angry with.
On a fun thought though, I'd settle for a quest to turn off the merchant pop up forever. I will even do a SE to fulfill quest requirements

During the Christmas holiday event, I didn't mind the popup. It had new items -- four out of however many -- and it was generally a good idea, imho. However, there's nothing new that we may have missed that you'd need to alert us to. Rather than a gentle Hey, here's some event goodies -- or some new stuff we've just added -- that you might not be aware of which is reasonable (to a point), there is this wall slammed in your face screaming BUY SOMETHING!! which isn't just poor marketing technique, it's downright rude.
Give me a 100coin, single-square statue that I can place that has a little plaque that says "NO SOLICITING EXCEPT DURING HOLIDAY EVENTS" that disables that damned thing except when its useful (new items added and/or holiday events) and I will be so happy. (NB: I suggest this b/c the island is the only configurable profile-ish thing we have, and the client should theoretically be able to detect the placed object and abort the popup)
