what is the best combination and amount of troops. I have unlocked 6 different troop units. would it be using a number of all 6, 5, 4, or 3 different type of troops.

you will need all of them, as different enemies require different attacks. once you get crossbows you wont need longbow much anymore.
i would suggest 300 of each type to start, and lots of extra recruits. there are many good adventure guides. two of the most popular are killste and evil-j. they have guides for all of the adventures.
