For farms and wheat fields, your settlers walk from farm to wheat field, back to the farm and to the storehouse! So, a common setup is: have the farm in the inner circle around your storehouse, then have the wheat fields on the outer circle around the farms: storehouse>>farms>wheat fields.
For cutters and foresters, place both close together so your foresters don’t go too far to reforrest what your cutter cuts
Also..."for the most part", listen to what higher level players have to say.....they have been there & know what they are talking about.

    Explorers and Geologists - Specializations

You don't have to invest 5 books per level. If you read the each of the levels, it says "Requires XX books in levels below". So, if you want to have a Geologist that specializes in finding stones, copper, and marble, you could invest 3 books each in:

    "Hidden Stone Stash"
    "Natural Copper Vein"

    "Two Marble in One"
    "Quality Copper Shafts"
    "Natural Stone Vein"

That's a total of 15 books invested in 2 levels. In the 3rd level, you could invest in:

    "Natural Marble Vein"
    "Copper Mining"

That's 6 more. (Or you could have invested nothing at all and skipped this level entirely) For the 4th-6th levels, perhaps you would pick:

    "Tendentius Geologist"

    "Iron Mining Surplus"

    "Ore Collector"

9 more books, bringing you up to 30. That leaves only the top tier to pick 1 of the last 3, any of which would help your cause.
This method allows you to really focus on certain skills and save books. By investing 5 extra manuscripts instead of 1 tome and 4 Codexes (codexi?) you save quite a few resources, not to mention a good deal of time. This same method can also be applied to your explorers.

However, following this practice for ALL geos or expl might result in incomplete quests and achievement goals.

You can download this excel file to help you plan out your specialists. When you've invested enough books in one level, it will turn green and you can go on to the next one. Just put an X (or whatever you like) into each box that you want to develop.

Upgrade your book binder as quick as possible because it will slow you down if you don’t.
You will use these materials in the bookbinder building to make your manuscript, tome and codex to train your specialists.

oops, wrong post.... My tip: Only invite loot spotters when you are ready to finish ( RTF ) your adventure. This is so that no one is kept waiting and the adventure can be finished in a timely manner.

When you are new look for a guild that offers what you think would be most helpful. The best help comes from good and helpful guildmates.

Tip: Place non-production buildings the edges of your island (barracks, trade office, tavern, provision house, residences).
