The Sonnets of the Red Tree
- I -
For ages the settler plains were all green,
Until a red tree appeared on the scene;
With modish hue and determination,
It assumed its post of decoration.
Some of the settlers despised the red tree,
It stood with an air of impunity;
Others avoided it altogether,
Its arrival presaged stormy weather.
The tree took rejection personally,
And lashed out with biased antipathy;
Even those who took pity on its plight,
Were attacked as the tree wielded its might.
To demand admiration and receive,
Only hate or pity with no reprieve.
- II -
The tailor sought out to help the red tree,
To curb its narcissistic tendency;
But the baneful tree would not bend at all,
And threatened the tailor with vitriol.
How could a clothier dare to suggest!
Its poor judgment was a source of unrest?
It beat down the tailor and those he knew,
Until those who dwelt on the plains were few.
Be sympathetic, don't hate the red tree,
It lacks the tenets of humanity;
Alone it stands, like an overgrown weed,
Time will soon pluck it and end the foul deed.
There is no devotion owed to a tree,
Respect demands acting respectably.
