Server lag - trace going from US to Europe?

I am not sure if I read this right... I just downloaded a ping plotter and traced the route from my comp to Ares server. Could someone explain to me how is this possible that the trace route points to New York and than to London and then to France?

I clearly see about 8 loops in US than 2 in London and 2 in Paris and then 3 loops to ubisoft.fr

Could someone confirm this? And why on this earth American server is routed through Europe? There is also 50% pocket loss (life) on the connection from NY to London (no kidding). That could explain a lot about the freaking lag.

Because american server =/= server actually in america. In this case our server appears to be physically located in france.

My tracert (by the way if you are using a windows operating system you already have the tracert program accessed via the command prompt) didn't go through london but rather from america to france then germany and then back to france. Part of the reason for this is the way the internet is physically connected. Since the server is actually in Europe then we must use the underwater pipelines to actually communicate with the server which means we must send that info to the actual location those pipes are at first then from the pipe's exit to the server. For me the moment I went overseas my latency went up by 3-4 times the american connection's latency.

Didn't know that US server is actually physically located in ...France:P Anyway 50% pocket loss is a huge sinkhole. But that might not explain the recent lag spikes. Every 1-2 min my game kinda freezes for a 1-2 seconds. It started recently right when they "fixed" the chat. My blocks started to fail almost consistently and trade screen flipping into spinning hourglass every minute or so. Is this me or anyone else has similar symptoms?

So do you believe they just moved the servers. It seems likely to me that they are wherever they have been. The recent lag was just that and recent. Also it overlaps that special week if you hadnt noticed. SO why do you think a long term item would be the cause of a short term issue.

Not necessarily. If they're doing traffic shaping and load balancing, their algorithms could be seriously screwed and sending traffic to nonsensical places.

Or I could be right and now that the special week is over the lag could have gone away which i have noticed. I mean it starts on day 1 of that special week and it is back to normal when it ends gee i wonder what it was.
