Something weird is going on with adventuring currently. My two key assumption:
A1) Things are fine on the BB servers.
A2) Flash visualization (what you see in your browser) is screwed.
Mind you, I could be wrong.
This would explain some of the issues going on on adventure islands, and provide the means of consistent though limited adventuring.
Some of the consequences of A2: if you see a general marching one way he might be actually going in the opposite direction; if you see a general has returned to his tent, he might still be marching; if you see a message "You general has been intercepted" it does not necessarily mean he has; the only thing you can trust are the battle reports.
Good news is that under assumptions A1 and A2, there is a way to overcome the "wrong troop composition" problem.
- Assign the troops, go back to your home island (without initiating the attack).
- Come back and check whether the troops are as expected.
- If not repeat steps 1, 2, as needed.
- Once the troops are correct, do it one more time (just in case), and finally launch the attack.
- Go to your home island; the only(!) thing that can be trusted are battle logs.
- Once you get your battle report, wait for the roughly the same amount of time elapsed since step 5. That way you will minimize the # of loops in 1-3 next time.
That way you won't assign to the general that's still marching (which I think is the cause of the issue), thus avoiding sending off attacks with the wrong troop composition.
