if you remove old ones you will lose the storage cap they had
All storage buildings increase storage not replace it. So if you added an improved storehouse you could get rid of the old ones but as above mentioned you will lose storage from them. Improved storehouses are not to replace storage but to greatly add to it.

They can as long as the Improved Storage capacity is the same or greater capacity then the ones your tearing down. Make sure upgrade them to at least lvl 4 should take care of it. Lvl 5 gives 9000 increase above the first 4 levels gives you
Improved storehouse is 3 times more storage. A level 5 ISH is 18,000. A level 5 regular is 6,000. So you could put up one level 5 ISH, remove 3 level 5 regular storehouses and your total storage would stay exactly the same. But why tear down the old ones?? lol

That is always the conundrum. Also, the regular's fit better for buildings where you want optimum travel time in most cases. Been at 337k for almost a year.. Since I'm not a big fan of haggling, it serves me just fine.
