This is a question for people who play pvp... Is this general useful? Does it make it easier to do it? Or the marshals from tavern are good enough?

It will not help you do the expeditions any better, but it will allow you to ferry troops faster from and to the expedition. This is less of an issue on the small islands, but the regular and large islands allow (and require) more troops to win. Since the time limit on expeditions is very short, that can be very helpful.
I never done expeditions either and was thinking about this guy in case I will try it once BB lowers the cost of weapons. Thanks for the info. Might get him now before Easter is over and they put him in gem shop for some 19 000 gems or something...
They already did with tuesday's maintenance.I will try it once BB lowers the cost of weapons.
You will have to do the math again if it's viable for you, though if I just use rule of thumb*estimate^ironbars:steelbars-1, then you can now "readily" break even so to say. Before using Heavy/Attack Infantry only, the economic way, just about got you to break even, as opposed to tossing thousands of iron units at it.
The double buffed ratio is 2 ironore to 1 ironbar to 1 steel, as you need 6 steel or 12 ironbars for each unit, using infantry only still is cheaper going by those values.
Though to compare, it took me a favorable (as in not too many enemy archer units and too many camps along the way) small colony and lose around 340 Attack Infantry and some 40 Heavies. The guy who recently took over my island lost around 190 Attack Units, mostly Archers and Cavalry (but way more heavies :P), if we end up backconverting and do other fancy math, our cost was roughly the same (brew/bread/settlers aside) I would say.
I've found it to be pretty useful, allows me to move troops around quickly if I miscalculate or screw something up.
Thanks Ceruhe for that info. I don't do pvp simply for the hassle of it. There is plenty of commotion and effort required to put into for ... very little reward. But again maybe one day I will be just bored enough of BK's to try it:P
You hit the nail on the head there. Will it ever make more profit than sending your explorers out each day? Doesn't seem like it even with the new weapon costs...or at least not enough to be worth the trouble.
But, once you manage to get enough troops to do an expedition its a fun break from grinding out RB/BK/VLT/whatever...makes you think a little bit instead of going by guide/memory.
