9 manuscripts, 6 tomes, and 6 codices takes about 6 weeks to complete using a 2x buff 100% of the time and making 4 manuscripts per day, which is what I'm currently doing though I'm not sure how long I care to sustain it. Normally, it takes several months just to complete a single specialist.
It's like the XP. It works out okay at first, but as you get to higher levels, it eventually gets to the point of why bother because the math that makes sense initially just gets broken eventually.

This should be fixed.. both the science system, and allowing players to rearrange books for a week, based on new science (if ever fixed).
Honestly I think they've forgotten about the science system. I doubt there will ever be another update on it again.
Why did I invest codexes in my explorersCodexes are soooo expensive to make, and refunds to rearrange even more so...
Artifact Search is well worth it I think. I gave it to my Luckys.
