If you're nervous about blocks, I'd practice it on something like Horseback or Outlaws where you won't lose anything of consequence.

I don't think I have had a problem with Wood Cutters and don't find any of the entry level Ali Baba blocks to be particularly problematic (though that big one in Second Thief looks scary), but I have messed up a couple times by not paying attention (76 cavalry doesn't mean 76 bows) or by inserting some MMAs to suicide and cutting the timing too close.

The test server is an awesome resource. I would goof around there. Working on blocks is easy there.
