Have 2 we decided on in guild:

Hey, remember all those unused production chains that you thought they had forgotten about?

    or

Load testing before the event? Oops, I knew there was something we had forgotten...

    The Story of the Forgotten

On a far-off island, there was a civilization that had become dominated by its scholar class, who sought to unlock the secrets of the universe. As their knowledge grew, they explored the fundamental energies that imbued life with self-awareness. Building on this, they created assistants born from the earth itself, first as experiments then as tireless servants. These earthen creatures were bound to serve their masters, and while self-aware, they were unable to disobey the orders given to them. The scholar-masters believed them to be the perfect servant, without need for nourishment, protection from the elements, or even air to breathe. As they became more complex, and more intelligent, the duties they to perform became more complex as well. Ultimately, they became the infrastructure of the island, performing all the menial tasks required and displacing those there before them, leaving their scholar- masters unhindered to continue their explorations.

This continued for centuries, with the servants continuing to improve so they could directly assist their scholar-masters in their research. Ultimately, there was breakthrough reported and a conclave called so the information could be shared universally. The importance of the new discovery was reported to be of such significance that none wished to be unaware; the entirety of the scholar-masters gathered into the large auditorium at the center of the University. The servants waited outside to return their masters to their homes, but no one ever emerged from the hall. When night came and the hall was opened, only the clothing of the scholar-masters was found. The masters were gone, and their created servants forgotten; they returned to their stations, bound to the work for which they were created.

For centuries more, the servants continued to carry out their assigned lasts, keeping the island in a state of perfect repair, eternally unchanging on the surface. Under the island, however, forces were building that threatened its stability. The servants did not understand why the island would tremor from time to time; they would simply repair the damage the tremors caused. This continued until, following a small quake, one of the library servants discovered something while picking up books to return them to their shelves. He discovered that the insides of the books contained writing. While he possessed the ability to read, as something needed to properly maintain the library, it had never been required of him to discover the content of the books within. Then occurred another breakthrough, while nowhere near the magnitude of those of the scholar-masters was nevertheless a fundamentally change. As the library servant’s duty was to maintain the library to which he was bound, perhaps there was information within the library that would help him fulfill his duty. However, while this servant had the ability to read, he lacked the ability to understand much of the content of the books for which he was responsible. But he could summon the courier servants, who would listen to what the library servant read to them, and in turn repeat it to other servants, those who labored in the laboratories and observatories, who could make sense of the words in the books.

For years the words of the library’s texts were repeated from servant to servant, spreading throughout the island. Finally, the cause of quakes that were happening with increasing frequency was discovered. There was an unstable interface between two sections of the continental shelf that ran under the island, which had been stabilized by the work of the scholar-masters. With the scholar-masters gone, the stabilizing forces had begun to decay, which would eventually cause the island to break-up and sink beneath the waves. The servants knew that when this happened, all that they were ordered to protect and preserve would be lost, possibly even themselves destroyed from the cataclysmic forces that would be unleased when the stabilization failed completely.

A sense of despair spread throughout the island, as each servant discovered they would not be able to fulfill their instructions – until word of it reached the library servant. He reasoned that his duty was to protect the books, and now he understood that it was that which was contained in the books that was of value; since the contents of the books have now been spread to all the servants on the island, if the servants survived, the information would never be forgotten. This idea spread throughout the island again and the servants decided the only way they could preserve the civilization they were created to protect would be to find a way to release themselves from their stations. Years passed as they looked for this release, so they could perform their final duty to their master – protect all they had discovered. The island rang with the voices of all that could speak, spreading the science and history of the civilization that created them. Finally, they determined that in releasing the forces that bound them to their duty, it would also release the last of the forces stabilizing the island. Final preparations were made, with all knowing that if but a single servant could escape the island, all would be preserved.

The servants stood on the edge of their domains, waiting for the restrictions to be lifted, waiting to escape the expected cataclysm. Each feeling the change, they moved at one, travelling swiftly into the water and trying to escape the raw forces tearing apart their former home. Less than one escaped for every hundred who tried, and those survivors stood and watched the island and the remains of a great civilization sank into the sea, to be forgotten.

The survivors formed groups, setting out for where the old maps said there would be land, travelling along the bottom of the ocean. Their progress slowed, and in the freezing temperatures found so distant from the sun, their actions became sluggish. Currents separated the groups, but individuals pressed forward, seeking land where the knowledge they preserved could be shared. Finally, one reached a small, prosperous island holding. Finding a safe area, he climbed out of the water, letting the sun warm him and restore him to full mobility. Until he was hit with a mass of enchanted water, and turned to dust.
