Waiting for the man to awaken may be prudent, but he may never wake up. If he does, he may be stark raving mad.
Destroying the statue isn't a good idea, and it also may not be possible to destroy it using brute force if it's enchanted.
Since Anslem knows a little about magic, I'd send him back to the path with a few volunteers to check things out and gather intelligence.
"Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking." ~ Marcus Aurelius
Sonya being the explorer extraordinaire that she is thinks she spotted leaves and herbs along the way back that may help our mysterious man. As she goes outside to gather what she needs you are instructed by her to use the wireless and summon all the generals you can. Sonya arrives back and you tell her the generals are on their way with maximum amount of troops to help. "Good" she said, "this medicinal poultice is going to take awhile to put together; then after the generals arrive we are going to find out what happened to my crew, with your help of course." "Of course," I reply, "and we will not stop till we find them all and get to the bottom of what has happened to this man and the mystery of that stone figurine."
Bah! Destroy the Excelsior, send the strange man back down the path, and wait for the stone figurine to wake up!
anyone know when this will continue with the next one?

Waiting for dude to wakey is uncertain as he may not ever recover until such time as the 'issue' is resolved; Breaking an obviously magical relic is more likely to inflict more damage than to break a (the) spell(s). What is needed is more information in this case and the only witness is not conscious... Heading back up the trail is our only option likely to return success.
“Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then be not too eager to deal out death in the name of justice, fearing for your own safety. Even the wise cannot see all ends.”
J. R. R. Tolkien
We're ready for the next part, not saying to hurry up, but hurry up.
